Apparently the guy who tried to assassinate Fico had Russian paramilitary connections.

Hard to see a Russian motive for it though, Fico was pretty much their ideal candidate.

@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@hengymrohebwlad sure, but Fico was another Orban in the making, a godsend to Putin. Stirring the pot has no guarantee they will get a good replacement.

Predictably, they are blaming Ukraine, but that's their instinctive flex for everything these days.

I keep writing "quertyset" instead of "queryset" when writing #django, like I'm just hitting the first 5 keys of my laptop each time

Sunak doing one of his "angry" speeches reminds me of the scene in the Inbetweeners when Will "Briefcase Wanker" gets all his classmates banned from the pub

@EA7KRC Christopher Hitchens once wrote about getting spanked by Margaret Thatcher. Not sure if he was entirely joking but he also wasn't clear whether he enjoyed it or not.

Got a CRT telly with a HDMI input a couple years ago as a Goodwill impulse buy for 99 cents. Works and everything, tested it in the shop.

It's sat under a pinball for two years while I find room to set it up, I never once tried plugging anything into it

Anyway I've found somewhere for it to live and started making plans for a stand and figured I'd test it and found out it's a piece of shit lol

@ifixcoinops because the guy who suggested "let's make decent products for a change" at the meeting got tossed out of the window

The US government should legalize cocaine in Hollywood to get some creativity back in the place.

Micro-dosing LSD or taking ayahuasca trips don't cut it. You end up with ideas like everything should be an NFT

You get the impression from today's Tories (Sunak, Truss et al) that they don't really like Britain or its people very much. They regard the British people as lazy, "woke", workshy and ungrateful.

Hence all their talk about doing away with doctors' sick notes, discouraging work-from-home, "Singapore on the Thames" etc. They would much rather be governing an imaginary authoritarian country somewhere in Asia with zero workers rights.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

I have no idea how the Tories would turn around their catastrophic polling or recover post-election but coming across that they actually like ordinary people would be a good start.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@peteriskrisjanis thinking in particular of the "Britannia Unchained" lunatics like Truss. The problem these geniuses don't face is that they have to win elections and even right-of-center voters genuinely don't want to live in their weird dystopia.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@forthy42 which (from their point of view) would be fine if you ruled an authoritarian state, but it's hard to oppress and enslave people while at the same time expecting them to vote for you.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@fishidwardrobe Thatcher most definitely. But she was able to paint the unions as the "enemy within" that held the British people back. The current lot view the problem as the British people themselves (aided of course by the nebulous "deep state").

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@kim_harding "Hard Brexit", or as the North Koreans call it, "Juche".

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@selzero if you vote Tory you're either a moron or a millionaire (check your bank account if you're not sure which category you belong to).

But....even the most self-interested narcissistic NIMBY home-owner would not like to live under a Trussite Neo-Singaporean regime.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@fishidwardrobe arguably the Deep State conspiracy goes back to the British comedy show "Yes Minister", which was a favourite of Thatcher's.

I suspect that the only people still planning to vote Tory at the GE are either very rich, very stupid, or still believe in Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy. Same applies to those planning to vote for Trump in November of course.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@kennethb Tories would never believe in characters who give away free things to children.
