Hey, if you're new here on mastodon, welcome!

Yes. It's different. Catch your breath.

This place is full of people who actually listen and actually talk, not just advertise, not just metric-game..

This community, strange, broken, partial, WIP, is not owned by a corporation.

Take your time, feel it out, and if you have questions, <extends finger and thumb, waggles hand> ping me.

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@gdinwiddie @GeePawHill Like most good questions, that one leads to more questions rather than answers.

I tried this game, Trust and Safety Tycoon, and found it compelling. Couldn't stop (for a while). It gave me a bit of a feeling for what people have to deal with when they manage a social media platform.

Laws of War assessment from an expert: "it is bewildering that humanitarian organizations are not encouraging the civilian population to move away from what will be a destructive and deadly urban battle, in which telling the difference between fighters and civilians is particularly difficult ... ". He says that evacuation calls are justified... https://lieber.westpoint.edu/evacuation-northern-gaza-practical-legal-aspects/

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@LukaszOlejnik @StOnSoftware Legal? OK. Moral? OK. The title of the article includes the word, "practical." What about that? How are people supposed to evacuate? Where are they supposed to go? How are they even supposed to move, given the circumstances?

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@LukaszOlejnik @StOnSoftware Yes, I notice one paragraph that superficially talks about "hardships."

I've heard reports on the radio that people can't realistically evacuate for various reasons. In one case, a car was hit by an Israeli rocket (or bomb?) when a family tried to follow the evacuation advice. I wouldn't feel comfortable attempting to evacuate when that sort of thing happens. I wouldn't feel comfortable staying put, either.

davenicolette, to random
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

As the headlines fill with news from Gaza, let's not forget Ukraine. The Russians have a history of stepping up their atrocities the moment the world's attention becomes diverted by another matter (e.g. as soon as the Nazis invaded Poland, the USSR invaded Karelia, because everyone was looking elsewhere). Unfortunately there are several hot spots around the world and we have to keep an eye on all of them simultaneously.

mattwynne, to feminism

This is a post I've had bubbling for a while, on : Why I have personally embraced it, why I encourage you to, and how it can explain why your “ transformation” is probably going to fail.

https://mattwynne.net/feminism

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@mattwynne I found this bit interesting: '...what I would regard as the true essence of agile software development — the self-organizing, transparent team that works in a trusting, collaborative relationship with it’s stakeholders — is an example of feminist principles in action" particularly because of the characteristics of the authors of the Agile Manifesto - white, male, top of the field (dominant), raised in an Anglo-derived culture (imperial), and uncomfortable with authority.

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@mattwynne You also reminded me of the single best team I've ever worked with. They did all the things you mention naturally. I often felt they were perplexed by the fact "agile" was a Thing with a Name - unnecessary for them. They were 5 women from 5 Asian countries, 1 Bolivian man, 1 black American man; administrative manager was a white American woman. Probably just a coincidence, of course.

Does "being comfortable with complexity" sound like something desirable to you?

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@gdinwiddie Hmm. The answer is complex.

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@gdinwiddie It wasn't a serious reply. If I were to reply seriously, I would say "yes." The world is complex, so it's good to get comfortable with that or at least learn to cope with it.

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@gwww @gdinwiddie I'm sometimes not serious, but don't tell anyone.

Are you uncomfortable with the complexity or with the pressure?

“Which Kinds of Tests Should I Write? Revisited - The Code Whisperer” https://blog.thecodewhisperer.com/permalink/which-kinds-of-tests-should-i-write-revisited

davenicolette,
@davenicolette@mastodon.social avatar

@baldur "...the notion that they pay us to deliver features and not write tests"

I find this a common problem among software developers. Customers pay us to develop features, and writing tests is one of the tasks we perform to accomplish that goal, as a matter of professional due diligence. "They don't pay us to write tests" or "to refactor" or "to keep our skills up to date" are not real "things." All that, and more, is part of the work.

davenicolette,

@gdinwiddie Not for me.

After checking out the micro-breweries in Peachtree Corners and a quick lunch at Peachtree Center, I was driving around the south side of Atlanta near Peachtree City, where Peachtree St. NW crosses Peachtree Ave SE, close to where Peachtree Drive turns into Peachtree Lane - you know the place - across from Peachtree Circle - and I couldn't help admiring the impressive examples of the official state tree of Georgia, the Southern Live Oak.

The next frontier for AI LLMs to conquer is sincerity and authenticity. Once they can fake that, there's no stopping them.

davenicolette,

@gdinwiddie If they learn by observing human behavior, it won't be long before AI LLMs can fake sincerity and authenticity.

@gdinwiddie @GeePawHill Understood. As is often the case, conversations migrate from topic to topic. My posts don't "knock" anything, either. The experiment I described was a learning exercise, spurred by curiosity. I think I learned a little from it about tools.
