No, developers, these are not my family. They are just contacts sharing the most common surname in the country of Romania.

Anyone know of a code editing environment that live updates the preview based off of the #CSS you're currently typing? No 'save' action needed?

CSSEdit / Espresso is too old.
• Mac, please
• PHP pages

@Luke @vanderwal Not a Nova user, but this may be configurable: https://devforum.nova.app/t/preview-with-mamp-localhost/2661

@Luke I can suggest looking into Panic’s Nova and Polypane. The first has a browser tab inside the editor with live reloading, the other is a browser customized for developers. Neither has quite what you’re after but may be useful?

Am I missing something or is there no RSS feed for https://web.dev ?

db,

@eeeps (there was a thing a while back about how web dev has no feed, but the one I have seems to be working fine so 🤷)

April Rain makes the most ethereal sounding post-rock i've come across

It's like a soothing balm to the soul, something you listen to when you're tired emotionally and need to replenish your capacity to feel

Especially the track waiting for sunrise and one is glad to be of service.

@impactology For me it’s definitely This Will Destroy You’s eponymous album, especially Threads

Why does this code cause a scrollbar in Firefox?

Test page: https://jsbin.com/wuwuxog/edit?html,css,output

(I found this bug by debugging France 24, e.g., https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20240426-russia-arrests-forbes-reporter-over-social-media-posts-on-bucha-massacre)

db,
@db@typo.social avatar

@simevidas @hi_mayank Not specific to custom elements, seems to happen to any empty inline element. The element itself has non-zero height, its parent div has zero height, chaos ensues. Probably related to one of these?

“Moving on from Mocha, Chai and nyc.”

Yup, for node dev at least “node –test” and “node:assert” is absolutely good enough. (Mocha via web-test-runner is still IMO the best option for front-end unit testing, tho.) https://evertpot.com/bigint-money-2/

db,
@db@typo.social avatar

@baldur Pretty happy with it! Wish it had a nicer reporter built in (eg. I had to comment out Skipped tests because they were getting on my nerves), but solid foundation.

Please help me find this song!

I think it's a relatively new/modern song. It sounded funk/soul-y to me, but it's far out of my usual noisy music circle.

It's upbeat, heard it a few times in a hip hotel lounge. I googled it then, I think it was by a black artist.

Title is something with fire, or burning, or burning up?

db,
@db@typo.social avatar

@pixelambacht @sarajw I sadly have zero immunity to this sort of thing, lol

db,
@db@typo.social avatar

@pixelambacht @sarajw Just to get it out of the way, shouldn’t the song still be in your Shazam / Music Recognition history?

Today’s thankless task: figuring out what about my bog-standard, non-JS, bag-of-HTML-pages of a personal website compels iOS Safari to jump to the top of the article every time I hit the back button, instead of maintaining the scroll position, when visiting any external link.

db,

@siblingpastry @aardrian I merely mentioned document.activeElement = main as what tipped me to finding the root cause. It's the scrolling to top that’s problematic.

db,
@db@typo.social avatar

@siblingpastry @aardrian It resets the scroll position to the top of <main> when returning to the page after navigating away from it. I'll try to clarify the title / content.

db,
@db@typo.social avatar

@siblingpastry @aardrian Well, in addition to focusing on <main>, iOS Safari scrolls to the top of it. It loses my place on the web page when I follow links.

In light of new developments in CSS, I’ve decided to freshen up my specification of QSX, the query language based on CSS selectors for extracting things from DOM. It now has a dedicated spot on my website:

Gave the ol’ HTML Standard a read to figure out how responsive images work, wrote down some details. Nothing revolutionary after a decade of spilled ink on the topic, but maybe a mental model that sticks?

I need help with CSS debugging:

Why is the image too wide, causing a horizontal scrollbar? This looks like a 100vw issue, but I don’t see that value anywhere.

db,
@db@typo.social avatar

@eeeps @simevidas I found it intriguing that sizes influences the layout width, so I pored over the HTML spec to get a better picture. Thanks for bringing these things up, fun times with the web platform!

un-useful css tooling app idea (please build it):

you input any srgb color, and it returns the color-mix function/s to achieve that as a mix of named colors (if possible).

also an option that just lets you visually mix named colors and copy out the resulting mix()

more everything named colors, please. the fact that they are arbitrary and weird just makes me like them more.

db,
@db@typo.social avatar

@mia A very rough sketch:

https://observablehq.com/d/21c815522262980d

Main idea: If a color C can be expressed by a mix of two colors A and B, it means that C is on the segment AB in the color space in which we mix. That means the Euclidean distances AB = AC + BC.

In September this year the Cluj County Library had an incredible push to Europeana (via the new-to-me culturalia.ro platform), so I am thrilled to introduce the first (and so far only) publicly-available PDF of a Romanian type specimen:

Specimen de caractere tipografice (1894)

I’m trying to figure out a system for my reference material, so I’m looking for a macOS app for structured data — like spreadsheets, but with more field types and better editing experience, à la Notion / Airtable.

Any recommendations?

Bonus points for straightforward storage (text-based file format, or SQLite).

@voxpelli saw your participation in some GitHub issues, and was wondering if you found a solution for running npm --workspaces scripts in parallel?

(Stumped by the fact esbuild's --watch mode is blocking subsequent scripts)

Early Communist-era type specimen from the (freshly nationalized) Universul state-owned enterprise. Notably, type samples are combined with propaganda imagery and short snippets explaining type terminology and processes.

An inside spread features type samples on the right-hand side, juxtaposed with propaganda imagery on the left-hand side. At the bottom of the left page, a paragraph educates the reader on typographical terms and processes.
