MacOS Safari: I’m unable to switch off “Settings > Privacy > Require password to view locked tabs”: If, e.g., I go to another settings “tab” and come back, the checkmark is always there again.

Does anyone else have this issue?

@rauschma Does it open a Touch ID/password dialog when you uncheck it?

In 2017 I bought a Nintendo Switch, and one year later a MacBook Pro. I still use both devices today.

The charging cable that came with the Switch still works without flaw, seven years later. I can use it to charge the MacBook as well.

The charging cable that came with the MacBook turned yellow (on the ends) and stopped working reliably a while ago. I replaced the MacBook’s battery and bought a new cable (from Apple), and now this new cable is starting to have to the same issue.

@pl I wish macOS allowed me to limit power output to 60W to preserve the charging cable. I don’t need fast charging.

  1. a secret group of powerful people control world events
  2. big pharma companies spread diseases to increase drug sales
  3. every person who owns a computer that is connected to the internet is being tracked and monitored

On Android, the user can accidentally launch Google Assistent by pressing the fingerprint sensor for too long while attempting to unlock their phone. No matter how many times this happens, Android will never change its behavior.

For example, Android could ask ”You keep opening Assistent and not using it. Are you opening it by accident? Do you want me to change the launch gesture?”

That would be an intelligent OS. So much frustration is caused by software still not being intelligent enough.

💡 CSS Tip!

To target the html element, you either use "html {}" or ":root {}" but thanks to CSS nesting you can simply use "& {}"

When used alone, the nesting selector will match the root element!

A one-character selector 🤯

⚠️ It has a lower specificity than html and :root

Online Version: https://css-tip.com/root-selector/

@css A specificity lower than html? So zero, right? The same specificity as :where().

It’s not wrong. But it’s not right, either.

“Creating Fluid Typography with the CSS clamp() Function”
https://www.sitepoint.com/fluid-typography-css-clamp-function/#:~:text=setting%2016px%20(or%20whatever%20value%20you%20want)%20as%20the%20root%20font%20size

It is, however, nice to see that my advocating for less broken fluid type approaches has paid off, even if the handwavy ‘accessibility’ explanations don’t point to my post that first raised them. It’s cool, it’s only my ego (and detailed explanations with examples).

simevidas,
@simevidas@mastodon.social avatar

@aardrian At the very least, such an article should say that anyone implementing fluid typography needs to check if their text gets sufficiently larger when zooming the page. You don’t have to be an accessibility expert to perform such a basic test, so everyone should do it.

News sites reporting on information without linking to the sources is a problem. For example, if the UN publishes a report, then news articles that include information from that report should link to the report itself. Almost no news site does this, at least here in Croatia.

simevidas, (edited )
@simevidas@mastodon.social avatar

@tomayac Whether it’s bad journalism is debatable. A journalist might say that links are not necessary as long as the text is accurate and informative, and that it’s not their responsibility to add links just because they publish on the web.

Spatial navigation¹ and reading-order² in #CSS when?

Especially, reading-order should be implemented by all browsers before masonry or any other additions to layout.

Re https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34UScXNr6BE, can StatCounter’s numbers for Windows versions be trusted? Browsers on Windows 11 say in their User-Agent strings that they’re on Windows 10 (see https://nielsleenheer.com/articles/2024/user-agent-reduction/), so where does StatCounter even get their Windows 11 percentages from?

simevidas,
@simevidas@mastodon.social avatar

@html5test Hm, I have my doubts that StatCounter’s script is able to accurately measure Client Hint values such as OS version that are not sent by default. What if the user visits a website and then immediately leaves? Is that enough time to get the OS version?

Chrome’s UI demonstrates the problem with icon buttons. Can you say with certainty what the icon button does? If not, then you understand the problem.
