Happy Birthday Steve.

@BasicAppleGuy I like that it calls this space Jobs' "labyrinth": it's not soullessly pristine, it's a place where the work is the focus. What a fascinating insight.

Sidenote: I wonder what the adorable mini Mac Pro's function was... I rather think I need one regardless!

@DigitalKrampus @BasicAppleGuy Thank you!

What a pity that (as your linked thread attests) this isn't available any more: the perfect upcycled enclosure for a Raspberry Pi!

Today at my local post office there’s a queue of 30+ people, one person working on the counter and none of the self service machines working sigh. The last time I was in, one woman came in to post a parcel and there was no one working on the post office counter. That was the third time she’d attempted to post that same parcel. The post office has pretty much become a joke in this country 🙄

@michelle On the plus side, for a brief while a great deal of shareholder value was created

Can anyone recommend any git-backed markdown editors for iOS? I’d love it to be easier to write blog posts on the go.

@sophie wow… you literally said iOS too! Sorry for being an under-caffeinated nincompoop 😬

Thread’s packed with interesting suggestions though, so thanks for that silver lining!

Found Wittgenstein's house. During years of studying his work, nobody ever mentioned he (co-)designed houses. To be here in the year people are experimenting with Large Language Models feels truly special. What would he have thought? Deserves two selfies.

@hdv for an excellent book that does mention his architectural oeuvre, I highly recommend this

    @sophie just thinking about the high probability that the training data will embed inaccessible code at massive scale is terrifying

    Thank you so much for Atro v3 btw: it’s an incredible release 🫶

    @oliverturner@toot.cafe avatar

    @nmoo it’s such a pleasure to watch you all smashing out best-in-class everything, from docs to DX, while still being genuine, approachable folks.

    Please keep doing what you’re doing! 🙌

    Bun does look interesting, however I can’t help but compare it to that somewhat short phase of time where everyone decided to use Yarn and now it’s just a burden 😅

    oliverturner,
    @oliverturner@toot.cafe avatar

    @DavidDarnes it’s so much more useful than Yarn ever was though: it solves ESM compatibility, it includes a test runner, reads .env files, has built-in sqlite(!), hot reloading webserver, file-based router… I can’t wait to see how many fewer dependencies I need to manage!

    Cover songs usually just leave me itching to hear the original, but there are two* ways I think they can succeed:

    1. it needs to deviate far enough from the original to take on a life if its own. See: Heartbeats by José Gonzáles, Hurt by Johnny Cash

    2. it needs to be very true to the original, but dialed up in intensity or emotion. See: Sound of Silence by Disturbed, Zombie by Bad Wolves

    Bonus points if it somehow manages to do both at once. See: Something in the Way by Colm McGuinness

    @sarajw I still remember the sense of discombobulation at discovering that Torn wasn’t originally by Natalie Imbruglia 🤯

    My absolute favourite is still this banger though…

    The interesting thing about a language proposal like the types as comments is that the repo's issues are nearly all from people who are:

    • against the idea ether for not liking types in general
    • thinking it is a Microsoft poison pill to JavaScript
    • trying good faith ideas without taking into account JS runtime wants
    • trying good faith ideas which are "I will make up a new type system, and everyone will agree on it"

    What you don't get: comments folks who think it's a reasonable idea

    oliverturner,
    @oliverturner@toot.cafe avatar

    @orta I think it’s both reasonable and achievable, hence I haven’t terribly much to add… perhaps that’s not that uncommon?

    Running through the Bun guides and I'm becoming convinced that this could be a seismic shift away from Node

    oliverturner,
    @oliverturner@toot.cafe avatar

    @seldo If all it did was make the pain of ESM compat just go away I'd already be sold, but the perf is unnerving at first... then addictive

    @alexwilson my initially positive response is becoming tempered by questions over things like funding, longevity, etc… but I’m still generally optimistic

    I'm very confused by what this product is but as far as I understand it is a box you can plug "anything" into and it can communicate with it. Apparently you don't even have to tell it what you plugged in, it just figures it out. When this was first explained to me I heard "anything" and assumed it meant "three or four common things" but it actually does appear to be "anything". RS232. SPI. JTAG. VGA. Flash memory chips. CO2 sensors. PS/2 mice from the 80s. Just… anything. https://mastodon.social/@attie@chaos.social/110866171361254767

    @mcc For something that can talk to anything, Glasgow is the perfect name

    oliverturner,
    @oliverturner@toot.cafe avatar

    @mcc it’s almost not even a joke: Glaswegians will engage with literally anyone in a way that feels entirely natural to both parties

    I, a reticent Londoner, have fallen into conversation with multiple strangers everywhere from banks to bus stops in Glasgow, and it didn’t once feel weird.

    Like I say: it’s the perfect name for something that will interface with anything

    Ran my first 5k race in about 6 years this morning. The Funky Monkey 5k. Fun time. Didn't quite make my goal time, but maybe I'll get there next time. Number 2 in my age group, but for all I know yet, that might be 2 of 2! :)

    @nmoo ohh… was it about how TW’s value proposition largely evaporates in the context of single file components?

    I ask because React’s lack of support for that pattern really feels like it might be the driver for a lot of the zealotry around TW
