But guess what. IANA won't always be around to issue addresses. Hell, the Earth won't always be around. And it won't be efficient to always phone Dr. Cerf's brain in a jar so he could give you a piece of address space when you're an ichtyoid from Kepler-452b anyway.

So some way to obtain addresses independently and universally at the same time is a must.

@espen The same goes for IP addresses also, by the way, because in the end they're also dependent on one centralized organization, and as such are also on thin fucking ice.

Fortunately, we have a lot more numbers than we have names, and networks like Yggdrasil may have a solution for IP addresses - just take basically any number at random and announce it.

@espen Seriously, the Internet desperately needs a better system for domain names. We can't trust registrars and governments with that. We just can't. They WILL ruin things for everybody somewhere down the line.

(also, may be implement real unicode support? a guy can dream, right...)

@espen IPv6 alone still depends on one organization to regulate, much like IPv4. You don't have an address unless the special org gives it to you.

True, it's a non-profit, and the rules of this org are generally lax - but that's what they are for now, who knows who takes it over in the future.

The trick of Yggdrasil is that every individual client gets their IP address independently, just like that.

Yes, but IPv6 in itself is so fucking ginormous that a single /64 will suffice you for approximately four billion traditional v4 Internets. It's just wasteful for one person, IMO.
