GitHub Next is just the best place to work.

Back in May 2023, I explored ideas around natural language coding with Johan Rosenkilde. Our ideas ended up complementary, and it was a fascinating and creative time.

One was SpecLang, one was "EEA". Over the next months EEA merged with new ideas and become Copilot Workspace. And, with the most amazing team I've worked with, we did lots of exploration and research and user testing through to technical preview today.

I've captured a little of this with the team's blessing here https://github.com/githubnext/copilot-workspace-user-manual/blob/main/origins.md

We're open and transparent about where we're at, and you can see that here https://github.com/githubnext/copilot-workspace-user-manual/blob/main/known-issues.md.

My programming languages work with C# generics, F#, C#/F# async programming and the simplicity of types, functions and data still have my heart, as do my ongoing responsibilities as F# language design approver. But right now I'm getting to be an applied researcher again, and loving it.

For those following the UK Post Office scandal.

I was looking back through the history and came across this 1999 Independent story on the "ICL Pathway" system, which was renamed Horizon. Somehow useful to see what a disaster the project was known to be even at the time.

For those in the UK, I highly recommend treating yourself and your loved ones to a cookery class with Migrateful

https://migrateful.org

For me, being taught Syrian cuisine by Randa in November was a total highlight of 2023. I'll be joining for more classes in 2024.

Migrateful are an award-winning UK charity with a mission to support migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in their journey to integration.

As an immigrant to the UK - albeit one coming under far, far easier circumstances - I'm deeply grateful for the home and opportunities I've found here. Immigrants enrich our societies and can inspire us. Together we can find humanity, wealth and build community, in confidence.

This is entirely ridiculous, yet also has me curious about the marketing campaign!

On the referendum in Australia...

I campaigned briefly for "Yes" while back last month. It was interesting, eye-opening. Already clear the Yes campaign was doomed then.

Partly not enough groundwork had been done preparing the whole idea over 10 years or more. Also they greatly underestimated how hard constitutional change is.

I did speak with one lovely lady who changed her mind from No to Yes based on our conversation. The language of "we have to listen, we have to do things differently, we have to start somewhere, let's start by listening" seemed to resonate with her. Listen. Listen. Listen.

Hopefully the idea of listening to First Nations representatives has entered the public sphere. Maybe good will come of this. Changing a country is hard.
