My mom is a retired computer science prof and she gets so, so irritated when people use "your grandma" as a trope for a non-technical person. I've found "taxi driver" a good stand-in. They're often well educated and pretty interested in various topics, but without special knowledge in a certain area.

I see Mhairi Black got censured in the Commons for using the word "pished" to describe Tories' behaviour in partying during the pandemic. I'm not sure why, it's a perfectly good Scottish word.

Had my first meeting with my dissertation supervisor, which went well. My proposal is OK, and the research questions are, too, although I need to decide on the scope. Now the hard work begins!

@Neverfadingwood Did you get any advice on research design? My five years as a has taught me that such decisions matter immensely, but it definitely wasn't obvious when I started, and I got the gist mainly from non-supervisors.

@Neverfadingwood Very glad to read that! And remember: you may always change things, and make the next part/article better. The science lies in trying, explaining what and how, and, if shit happens, knowing why, in order to avoid repeating it. When you've done all that, you could get the driver's license a doctoral degree really is.

Hi, I would ask the uni library to pay for some kind of media archive. Then, I'd dig into articles in corpus linguistics for methods 😃 We are good at words, after all. Add "diskurslinguistik" or "korpuslinguistik" to your literature searches for German and "corpus-assisted discourse studies" or similar words for English.
