Jemand in Düsseldorf heute Zeit für Cirque du Soleil? Wir haben krankheitsbedingt ein Ticket übrig und würden es kostenlos abgeben, damit es nicht verfällt. Show: Kurios Showbeginn: 12:30
@vicgrinberg I hope to convince the teens too - they're still skeptical. But I've seen Cirque du Soleil once as a teenager many many years ago (as the kids say "probably they're not the same performers" 🙈 ) and it was fantastic and magical
You all have those few nagging, unread emails that you scroll by real fast each time you look at your inbox right? Those that you should’ve read and responded to days ago??
01:04: Financial report to the SNSF
00:49: Four abstracts in the field of digital history
02:47: Second review of a journal paper on knowledge representation

Teen did a two-week internship in industrial metal-working and thought it was really interesting, but was shocked at the gender balance. She expected mostly men, but the trainees were >99% male. It would be a good career for all genders as it requires precision and care (and the heavy work is mostly done by machines).
#pokemonGo Denkt dran, dass morgen die wunderbare Chaneirasause stattfindet, für die ihr Bällchen und freie Plätze in euren Pokeställchen haben wollt. :-D
This is a career-defining moment: holding the current issue of the top journal in your discipline, where a study you're first author on is the cover story.
I'm happy, but please know that this does not mean I am home safe as a productive research scholar. I'm still on an associate professor contract with a time limit, and there is no guarantee that my next contract will have any research time in it at all.
I kinda gave up on the idea of teaching students command line stuff in the intro to corpus linguistics 😢 , but now I think I can't actually expect any tools other than browser based ones, because many students only have tablets? 😭 dang #corpusLinguistics#teaching
@grvsmth that’s cool but I can’t do python with them at that level. I’m so old not everyone had a laptop when I started either, we used the dept’s computer pool. 👵🏻 but nowadays I think they wouldn’t plus they can’t install a tool there anyway
@grvsmth 5 years ago I used to do regular expressions, grep, plus inter annotator agreement, collocations with chi square. It really relied on students to do ALL the assignments though and was a huge amount of work. This year I used online corpus search tools instead (zero command line) but I at least showed them AntConc.
I want to go back to using regular assignments instead of a final in-person exam, but I worry about how to make sure they actually do the work themselves.
I "used" being sick a few weeks ago, when I simply could not drink or eat much, to reduce my coffee consumption to a single cup a day, usually in the morning.
I do not miss the caffeine that much (unsurprisingly, because I do not think it impact me much) - but gosh, do I miss the ritual of getting an afternoon coffee 😢
@vicgrinberg I also really look forward to and enjoy my one cup of coffee a day (it only became a ritual in covid times, before I only had it occasionally). ☕ But I have mine in the afternoon - I find that in the morning I don't really need it and it makes me jittery. But those 5 minutes in the afternoon, whether quick or really sitting back for a little, that's bliss 😊
After spending much of last week on admin, this week I'll finalize one paper, prepare two classes, work on some research projects and planning at least 2 events, plus spend some time on advising PhD students and one final exam. phew
So far: 19 meetings scheduled this week 😅
ACL giving up on anonymous peer review is probably just a step towards giving up pre publication peer review. #my2cents At these volumes, the process is broken anyway. 🤷♀️ #nlproc
