I'm still slowly working on improving my homebrew CircuitPython game console. Recently I tackled the problem of screws – they don't work very well with the acrylic case, tend to either be too tight or fall off. So I tried something new: solderable nuts. They can be pick-and-placed and reflowed, and they give you very good way of getting the screws in.

I also experimented with a Xiao S3, but I think that I will switch to an ESP32-S3 WROOM module instead. More testing is required with the S3.

Lol--after 15 years I finally resurrected my 1978 Kawasaki KZ400 "Reloaded"! I put nearly 50 miles on it today but for some reason the battery wasn't charging so I had to park it and put it on charge. I wonder what's wrong with it? ;)

@elaterite looks beautiful, good luck with the battery 🍀

@deshipu i mean... i can't argue with that logic ;)

@elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

you know hacking kubernetes manifests is so much more comfortable in python... is there any drive to get a yaml processor into the python standard lib?

elmiko,
@elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu that makes sense, but the "batteries included" is a big part of what makes python so useful. oh well, i'll just keep juggling venvs lol

elmiko,
@elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu all these reasonable suggestions.... what am i supposed to do! XD

elmiko,
@elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu this is not helping!

elmiko,
@elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu appreciate it ❤️ , i'm just using a venv for now. it's just a pain, because all i want to do is write some small scripts to help with debugging, and if the source data were in json that would be wonderful, but it's not...

i probably should install a system-wide version, but i seem to developer an aversion to installing dev packages into my root filesystem lol

elmiko,
@elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu yeah actually... i think fedora 39 installs python3-pyyaml by default perhaps lol

elmiko,
@elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu i just tried to install it, but it says it's already there and i just installed this machine less than a month ago, and i know i didn't install it. maybe some dependency needed it.

    I am really getting the hang of stuff. Adding a new domain and website? Copy/paste dns settings. Add a simple server stub to my nginx.conf, run certbot --nginx -d domain.name and done. After it is running, add an index.html or setup a container and do some forwarding. Nice!

    elmiko,
    @elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

    @jwildeboer does the security side of it ever make you anxious or nervous?

    i want to get back into self-hosting, but it seems like the security part has gotten more challenging over the years. maybe i'm being overly worrisome though.

    @jwildeboer thanks for sharing, appreciate it!

    that's smart thinking on the web parts, much easier to be confident about static content.

    just so i understand, you are running the mail agents and what not in containers behind the reverse proxy?

    Python people, do you make short-lived intermediate variables to make your return statements readable?

    For example, which of these would you tend to prefer?

    elmiko,
    @elmiko@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ehmatthes i generally prefer the first style (explicit variable name for return), mostly because i find it more readable that way.
