Last time I used Windows was around 1998. Never needed it after that. So no. I cannot fix your windows problems. Who needs that stuff anyway? ;)

Welcome, Sweden to Nato. It's a shame how Turkey and Hungary delayed the whole process, but we are here now. Let's look forward towards a united Europe. If need be, without the USofA under Trump.

We might need a switch to Nat-EU soon and I know this is not just a thought experiment anymore but instead a strategy that is being explored. Not sure if Mark Rutte as NATO chief will be able or willing to go to implement that new strategy that focuses on Europe having to defend itself.

I am happy to comment on your post of a screenshot of some quote or tweet or Facebook post with the missing ALT text for that image, but I do hope you will do it as a courtesy to other folks yourself with the next post :)

What I dream of: "Here's my stuff. My thoughts, my pictures, my videos. Here's who should be able to see it. And who's able to share it. Have fun! Is all". So what I really want is a storage layer and an ActivityPub layer on top of that that distributes my "stuff". I don't want to think about that being Mastodon, PeerTube, PixelFed, Lemmy etc. It's ActivityPub and my content. Nothing more. Who builds that? ;)

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@julian Yes, it's the promise of @activitypods but unfortunately they still didn't get beyond the two apps that are too limited in scope, IMHO, "Welcome to my home" and "Mutual Aid".

Upgraded my instance at @mastohost to the Star plan. I still think it shouldn't be needed for an instance with just 2 users, but I also want to make sure that we grow this ecosystem of many instances instead of falling into the oligopoly trap of just a handful of VBI (Very Big Instances). I am putting my money where my mouth is. And you should too! Running your own instance with masto.host taking care of everything is such a good experience!

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

And yes, both @mastohost and me know that I am a special case with the amount of followers I have and the background traffic/costs that causes. But I now have a bit of space to invite other members of my family to be on "our" instance and have an alternative to the Facebooks and Twitter/X hellhole :)

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

I really hope that we can get to a world where running your own instance is more or less for free so we can get to a truly diverse world of free, global communication with every single individual being able to decide what to see and what NOT to see. We will get there. It'll take some time. But is definitely your best bet, IMHO.

@BeAware I'd need a stable IP address for that. Unfortunately I live in Germany where disconnects and new IP addresses (both IPv4 and v6) are the norm for domestic internet connections. And ADSL (the A stands for asymmetric, meaning harshly reduced upload speeds) severely limits that approach.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@BeAware I've been at masto.host since 2018 and never needed CLI access. If needed, an e-mail to Hugo has always solved any issue. And that is exactly what I want from an instance hoster. To take care of the details while I focus on other things. That's the service I happily pay for.

Jeebus. Trying to find out how long the connection between a SD Card host (the chip and possible drivers) and the card slot is allowed to be in cm (I'd even accept inches by now). After reading 100s of pages of specs still no simple answer. It seems to be Very Secret Information :)

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@jdblair That's eMMC, not SD?

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@jdblair But that is not my use case ;) I am looking at a 3D printer that only has a microSD slot and that is just too fiddly for my old hands. So I got an adapter cable I can put in the micro SD slot and that has a standard SD card socket on the other side. And now I wonder how long that cable can officially be. For SPI traffic I think the length can be quite long, for parallel (so according to you MMC) 200 mil?

Social networks and their algorithms have educated us that the most extreme reaction will get the most interaction which in turn delivers satisfaction. It is also the main reason, IMHO, that discussions in real life have become poisoned and radicalised. It taught me to block and mute generously. Which I find a sad thing, but alas.

@vosje62 I am running my own instance, so I see it both from the user and admin side ;)

I am so old, that I immediately order an adapter from micro SD (AKA TF Cards)to normal SD for my 3D printer. There is a physical size limit to things I can reliably plug in and take out and micro SD cards are just too small for me. YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary).

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@mxk All I can say is that it works without problems, standards compliant or not. Some older 3D printers might need a firmware update to recognise a card change event when using this adapter, but I don't really care and simply turn the whole thing off and on again to "fix" that.

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

(and no, I don't need or want my 3D printer to be network or USB connected. 3D print jobs can take a lot of time to finish so I prefer it to do it all standalone. I don't want to run a computer in parallel. That's just wasting more electricity. Plug in the card, select the print job, let the printer do its thing. In my vicinity, though. I still fear the risks of unattended 3D printing)

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@mxk After some checking, I think the cable length is not a problem. Most 3D printers still use the SPI method and not the parallel mode to connect the SD card and SPI is quite robust with a cable this length. In parallel mode it would be better to have bidirectional drivers, but also not strictly needed. We are not using high speed transfers here. Would be different when you'd use this adapter cable with a (video) camera.

Sometimes perfectly stable and working software is suddenly called "legacy" with a negative connotation just because someone tries to make up a justification to use a yet unproven ShinyNewThing in a project. #SarcasmButOnlyHalf

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@srtcd424 It's an old pattern. Talk working solutions down to promote your unstable ShinyNewThing as the supposed future and declare all problems with ShinyNewThing to be an important part of the journey towards Utopia ;)

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@srtcd424 The worst version is where those few that fought for ShinyNewThing leave the company with the "we never got the support we needed" to go elsewhere that they claim truly understands ShinyNewThing, leaving behind scorched earth ...
