General Assembly overwhelmingly votes positively on resolution to accept as qualified to join as full member. 143 countries vote yes, 9 no, 25 abstain. (Possibly paywalled) https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/un-general-assembly-set-back-palestinian-bid-membership-2024-05-10/

The decision on joining as full member will most likely be vetoed again by the US in the security council, though. But it is a strong signal nevertheless.

Some 20+ years ago, we, the users of the web, fought hard to kill pop-up and pop-under windows forced on us by spammers and other scum.

Progress! Now pop-overs are officially standardised. And supported in all browsers.

https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/popover.html#dom-popover

UPDATE adding #SarcasmButOnlyHalf to make it very clear that this is not progress.

@duco It’s a way to overlay non-modal and, when combined with <dialog>, modal content. Which from a user perspective means „something is hiding my view on the content“.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@duco As I said in another comment in this thread. It’s dual-use. Can be used for good things and can be abused for nasty things.

My blog at https://jan.wildeboer.net might have some problems in the next few days as I have to change the DNS setup due to a spammer abusing that subdomain. See https://social.wildeboer.net/@jwildeboer/112416442812128898

@andyc Yes. It's a small shop.

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

Le sigh. Now I have to set up A, AAAA and a TXT record in my DNS as a spammer is using one of my subdomains configured as CNAME and that means I cannot add a SPF record for that subdomain.

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@antondollmaier If you use CNAME, you cannot add a TXT record for that subdomain. But you need to set a TXT record for SPF per subdomain or else mails won't be SPF checked when they claim to originate from that subdomain. The DMARC check will still work and catch the spammer, though.

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@thorsten A good explanation on SPF and subdomains is here: https://dmarcly.com/blog/how-spf-works-with-subdomains

As to why a CNAME means no additional TXT records for that subdomain, see https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc1034 s3.6.2

"If a CNAME RR is present at a node, no other data should be present"

That's why I can't add a TXT for that subdomain. So now I switched the setup of that subdomain in a way it doesn't need CNAME, so I can add the SPF record.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@coatilex Bis auf den blauen Kasten mit Hinweis auf das Formular (ohne den Stichtag 19.05. zu benennen) sehe ich da keine gezielte Ansprache von EU-Bürgern?

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@jimclark Und dann noch sicherstellen, daß man am Wohnsitz im anderen EU-Land aus dem Wählerverzeichnis ausgetragen wurde. Dafür sind die Fristen aber teilweise schon abgelaufen.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@anpa2112 Ja, ist nur eines der vielen Probleme mit denen wir EU-Bürger klarkommen müssen. Deswegen wäre es schön, wenn die Parteien uns als Zielgruppe erkennen und da was tun.

TIL: with git redate -c <# OF COMMITS> you can change the commit date/time and messages of commits in your repo. However: make sure you do NOT include the very first commit or the command will fail. So if you have N commits in your repo, make sure that -c is always at least one lower than N.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@tezoatlipoca Yes, it's on the roadmap and there were pull requests since quite some time. But that's it :( On my browser mastodon just ignores it and renders it a bit less beautiful ...

And I really mean just basic. Bold, italics, code/blockquote and links markdown style is enough for me. No need for the more fancy stuff. It was almost there last year, see https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/24239 but that pull request is now dead, AFAICS.

jwildeboer, to fediverse
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

When I joined the via my own Mastodon instance back in 2018 (and with an identi.ca, status.net, pump.io history going far back), I never thought of it as a Twitter, Facebook etc alternative. I saw it as a new planet. A fresh approach to build a real social network. I still look at it that way. I want to explore new possibilities. Try new things. Escape the gravity well of the "old", centralised networks. Find a better orbit. That is why I block threads.net on my instance.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@rameshgupta I might change my position once threads.net really supports the fediverse. Right now it's a one-way street. Posts from threads.net get pushed to our side, but we cannot send posts or replies to their side. So threads is shutting us out. To which I react accordingly. But other instances are free to decide otherwise. That's also part of our freedom here.
