@charlienorth My first laptop had 1MB RAM (and a 5MB hard drive). I thought it was amazing.

Action stations at the sideSister album creation weekend.

elsemusic,
@elsemusic@musician.social avatar

Following up on the writing weekend, I've edited the audio demos of the nine new songs, and created a structured online work area to make the next steps as straightforward as possible. I've transferred the lyrics and chords to spreadsheets ordered by bar number, which will exactly reference the DAW location.

Some songs will need further tweaking, but we have several we can immediately begin recording. Today I should be able to frame up the first of these songs.

Progress!

@cassana I agree. It's a poisoned chalice.

It is also a bubble. The risks are so much greater than the revenue, and IT managers at early adopters are cutting projects and losing sleep over the projects already commissioned.

It's good to be aware of what's happening, but also good to hold this phenomenon at arm's length.

@elsemusic @cassana I disagree it will affect Billie Eilish. She has a large fan base and a tonne of outside music deals. She’s clear.

The folks really at risk are musicians who make library music, TV/advertising music. I can’t think of anything more future toast.

The industry will continue to fund young faces as business vehicles imo. Hedge funds will buy more publishing.

Money wise, man it’s hard to earn a coin!

Since we released sideSister's debut album (https://sidesister.bandcamp.com/album/nothing) we've had a lot of nice comments, and we'd like to share a couple of our favourites.

Robotron@esoteric.party: "... it's pretty astonishing - thick harmonic chord progressions, long melody lines, really great production, sounds like a 1000 things and also nothing you've quite heard before at the same time ..."

Chris Mills: "... listening to this album is like breaking into a magic cave of endless wonders ..."

We've submitted the first single from the debut sideSister album (https://bandcamp.com/VideoEmbed?track=3595615183&bgcol=ffffff&linkcol=0687f5) to a huge number of internet reviewers and influencers. It's costa bit because we've used an agency (https://groover.co). We've had a good strike rate at just under 25%, but responses are not terribly useful. They broadly break down into three categories.

Playlists, playlists, playlists. Tracks from our debut album (https://sidesister.bandcamp.com/album/nothing) are being added to more Spotify playlists. Mixed feelings about that.

The album, and tracks from it, are also being included in a number of music blogs. We'll post links when they're published. I'm hoping blog and playlist authors will be puzzled and curious if they get hits from Mastodon.

We've sent the debut sideSister album (https://sidesister.bandcamp.com/album/nothing) out for review and playlist consideration. What amazes me is how differently people view our songs; sometimes in the same review.

"It's a bit too commercial and pop like for our playlist" vs "far away from being commercial sounding enough to fit my playlists"

"impressive but always slightly complicated" vs "very simple and well-executed"

"not cheerful and positive enough" vs "upbeat, good vibe"

When it comes to vocals, it's sometimes hard to accept people were listening to the same song.

"Your voice is sweet and powerful at the same time" vs "the vocals lacked more strength"

"Really lovely vocals" vs "wasn't over the moon with the vocal side"

And of course there's the inevitable "Hi, Mr. Sister" ... but I'm figuring English might not have been a first language there.

sideSister is getting added to Spotify playlists, and we have mixed feelings about that. Still, they do say the nicest things.

"The song has a dreamy, atmospheric quality to it. The vocals are enchanting, and the harmonies create a lush sonic landscape. The instrumentation is well-crafted, and I appreciate the blend of electronic and organic elements." https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3pvGrak2lbSXyc2ViOBOuT

You can hear "Lovelock" for yourself in the above playlist or on our Bandcamp page. https://sidesister.bandcamp.com/album/nothing

@elsemusic or as a current featured track on a thing with hopefully slightly less mixed feelings...

I first encountered a Suzuki Omnichord in the early eighties when a local beat poet used it as a regular part of his performance. Its portability makes it a remarkably useful instrument. http://www.suzukimusic.co.uk/omnichord-heaven/index.html

There are some gems in this collection of the top one hundred musical performances on the BBC. Check out Jimi Hendrix (I think he's about 54). https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2022/oct/06/the-100-greatest-bbc-music-performances-ranked

I've been reading up on the Reaper web interface, which enables you to control various features from any device connected to the same local network as the computer running Reaper. My specific use case is to customise monitor mixes, which looks trivial from the documentation.

Has anyone used this feature?
