Yet again someone has completed an online contact form, looking for an answer to a legitimate question, without completing the field for their email address.

Do they think we can reply by magic?

What can be done to prevent this error?

@ColinTheMathmo is the email address a mandatory field, coded to recognise things that look like valid email addresses? You're going to cut down on questions, as people will just fail to complete the form, but can you record partial completions to try and identify these (and whether there are commonalities)? People are very used to things being interconnected and forget/don't realise when they aren't (see radio stations using WhatsApp for messages and people not signing names

@ColinTheMathmo because they are used to the app knowing their name in their normal chats with friends (not knowing/realising) that this information isn't available to the radio station.

@ColinTheMathmo ranting's good. Maybe it's time to go back to forcing people to send an email from their actual email address rather than filling in a form and then not including the email address. The old contact us link that generates a new message to the contact-us email address in their mail client. People still won't provide all of the information, but that's people and you and I both understand what average intelligence means.

@ColinTheMathmo is there any way of telling whether any of it is browser autofill? I've fallen into autofill traps before.

@ColinTheMathmo ultimately, you're always going to have incorrectly completed fields/missing data, because people. As long as publishing still has typos go to print, while humans use mental shortcuts in processing data (especially visual data), this will persist. (If anyone thinks they have solved the issue, all that's happening is that they aren't seeing the failed attempts). So there's a cheery thought for you.
