@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com

Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I work on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that keeps rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order).

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

Had an interesting discussion with a QA person.

I noted that proper QA isn't just babysitting tests, it's risk analysis. The same sort of work insurance actuaries do.

Basically, "Determine the cost of a complete failure of this system, including it's rebuild. That's the budget for QA. Betcha QA can deliver under budget very effectively."

If you want current, Real World proof of this, See Boeing.

star trek series just about the star fleet style division who are constantly fucking with the design of the uniforms

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@brennen

Imagine every time you pull your pants out of the dryer, they were a completely different style. That would be kind of tiring after a while.

I'd wager there are whole sections of starships that are actually used as secret closets for crew to store the more comfortable or favorite designs.

@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@brennen

Makes you wonder if there are off screen vacation spots full of folk wearing components of outdated uniforms. Kinda surprised the shows never capitalized on that for costume reuse.

Hilariously, most of West Virginia's original boom came from migrants who were tricked into taking trains out of New York, and then they wound up settling there.

There are huge Italian populations in areas like Fairmont and Clarksburg, WV.

I swear these folk never actually bothered to talk to their grandparents.

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@obeto

Yep, went to school just west of Clarksburg and learned all about it. Often, first hand by talking to the old timers.

For what it's worth, I like "SLOP" for unwanted LLM generated content that pads out pages.

And if you want a backronym, I suggest "Selected LLM Generated Padding".

Yes, the backronym is wrong.

That's what makes it perfect.

You will be shocked, SHOCKED I say, to learn that even though there are purchased ad keywords for “steel toe slippers”, no company offers this product for idiots such as myself who insist on walking into furniture while still half asleep.

Looks like I will need to make them myself.

do people still have pigeonholes? were/are they even a thing in the U.S.?

many folk ate put in them.

I should probably get steel toed slippers.

Took off the sock.

Yep. It’s broken.

I will spare you the photo.

Does mean the morning walk will be a bit slower tomorrow.

How I know I'm old (#25)

I keep a small bag full of quarters in my car for when I need to feed a meter.

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@obeto

I usually feed a meter whenever I need to drive 10 minutes to get somewhere downtown and I don't feel like spending two hours on the VTA or riding a bike across three freeway ramps.

Granted, my city also has things like this:

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@obeto

Heh, had a conversation with The Spouse about that, and how those freeways were basically where the old Red Car lines ran.

Such a goddamn tragedy.

This paper is trash. We do this every few years.

The conclusion is correct (graduate degree holding white men believe the most 'taboo' conspiracy theories), but the reasons it suggests why, are sociology-babble garbage. The real reason is:

  • Racism is a lie. To believe in racism, you must believe a set of easily debunkable lies.
  • Richer, whiter, maler, more educated populations are not less racist, despite attempts to twist stats to say this. They're more racist.

@skry @trochee @mekkaokereke

My take is that they believe the circle jerk theory. If you work hard, you are successful. I can see people who I am better off than, so I must be working hard. This fulfills what my hard working parents told me about the Puritan work ethic ( ignore that most of them starved to death).

The people who are not as successful merely need to work harder, like those rich guys on TV say.

The fact that it’s bullshit would destroy their world.
