flamingo_pinyata,

Most large-scale attempts at communism were managed in a centralized way top-down by force. One strong leader, usually with a cult of personality. Glorification of the military. Devaluation of individual life and emphasis on sacrifice for the common good. Suppression of dissent by violence.

You can see the parallels with fascism. I’d even argue that what we know as communism and fascism mainly differ in their approach to the economy.

On the other hand, capitalism exists and thrives in chaos. It doesn’t exclude authoritarianism - actually it tends to produce it when capitalists capture the government. But some capitalist countries manage not to slide all the way and have been keeping up some kind of freedom for decades, so it kinda works.

flamingo_pinyata,

Let me guess, you’re an American who has never been outside of the USA, never read anything about other countries, and believes 'Murica is the greatest one forever and only one that matters (even in evil)

No matter what so many people say, it’s not mandatory to have a partner!

Invest your effort in figuring out how to live with yourself. Build a life worth living on your own.
A right person might come, or not. But at least you didn’t waste your life chasing wrong goals.

flamingo_pinyata,

I know they prefer tea, but still the number seems too low

flamingo_pinyata,

Anecdotal evidence (seeing a couple of methheads) says it works.
For weight loss at least, doesn’t mean you will look good, just thin.

flamingo_pinyata,

They mean this type of traditional outdoor shoe. Espardenya is more of a Catalan thing, and popular as a souvenir. Though calling it “most popular” might be a stretch.

flamingo_pinyata,

Yeah, she didn’t really address fraud comparisons. Went straight to sexism. Both can be true, and if you are a CEO of a medical company you should be ready to prove your shit works.

flamingo_pinyata,

Preempting all the “he was a man of his time” apologists:

Columbus was arrested during his lifetime because his actions were considered awful by his contemporaries.

flamingo_pinyata,

Why are Baltic and Nordic peoples still Christian? Why are Berbers still Muslim? Etc…

At some point the violence of conquest, colonialism and enforced religion is forgotten. And the new social structure becomes accepted and enforced internally like it’s the only natural way to do things.

flamingo_pinyata,

Vatnik found a way around Catch 22. Pretty creative if you ask me.

Israel Has Created a New Standard for Urban Warfare. Why Will No One Admit It? (www.newsweek.com)

(...) In their criticism, Israel's opponents are erasing a remarkable, historic new standard Israel has set. In my long career studying and advising on urban warfare for the U.S. military, I've never known an army to take such measures to attend to the enemy's civilian population, especially while simultaneously combating the...

flamingo_pinyata,

Upvoting because it’s a good onion-like article.
Core of truth with a thick layer of irony.

I know all the pro-Israel and pro-Hamas people are going to go crazy in the comments and it makes me glad. True Onion spirit.

Why are Asian products so often wrapped in really *thick* plastics?

I live in Europe but sometimes shop at Asian supermarkets here. One of the things I notice with almost everything I buy there is that plastic packaging feels a lot thicker than that on European products. Is there a rational reason for this? Are plastics simply cheaper? Or do people worry more that products might spoil? Are these...

flamingo_pinyata,

Are those products imported from Asia?
If so the transport might require packaging them to survive the trip.

flamingo_pinyata,

Remember when Ferrari was a technological pioneer rather than gimmick manufacturer.

If you want to know what an electric sports car should be like look at Rimac.

flamingo_pinyata,

On the Isle of Man they be like “I’ll have half a kilo of XXX”

flamingo_pinyata,

Seeing how some users already interpret is as a dating app … they’re not the only ones

flamingo_pinyata,

tbh, up to 80 years ago Europeans were in constant war as well and nobody else drew their borders
EU had to be created to finally stop French and Germans from killing each other

flamingo_pinyata,

I understand these questions as conversation openers rather than actual questions.
Having one “favorite” anything let alone something as vague as a color, is impossible. And the person asking doesn’t really want a specific answer, they just don’t know what to say so they also follow a scripted questions they’ve heard before.

So I will respond with something like “I listen mostly to Genre A and Genre B. I’ve been to the concert of Band Z recently. What’s the latest concert you’ve been to?”
Or “I try to wear bright colors in the winter, to try and compensate for the gray days and cold nights”

Something related to the opening question but doesn’t have to be a singular answer. More like your general opinion on colors followed by a question so the other person has something to latch onto for their turn in conversation.

flamingo_pinyata,

I used to think the same, but came to think small talk is kind of useful. Even though I’m not good at it.

  • Hey fellow human, I acknowledge your existence and wish to interact with you
  • Thank you fellow human, I also can’t dedicate mental and emotional capacity for a deeper conversation but still wish to interact with you…
flamingo_pinyata,

Not ideal, though. A mixed area would have been better. Acknowledging Occitan is important but it gives the false impression that a majority speaks it. And it goes way too north.

flamingo_pinyata,

If I was in Embraer leadership I’d be scrambling to design a jet in the 737 class right now. It’s just one step up from what they already make. Embraer is already popular with US regional airlines and would be more acceptable in the US market than Comac.

flamingo_pinyata,

The only other pair sharing the same number are Russia and Kazakhstan with 7

flamingo_pinyata,

Big pro for Organic Maps is rendering speed. So smooth and perfect…
Everything else is on the OsmAnd side. It’s loaded with features, everything you may want and more. But rendering lag is so annoying that I’m using Organic by default.
