Have had to read a lot of book reviews in academic journals this week for reasons.

Amazing how many of them can be summarised as:

"this book is factually accurate but also makes our area of study seem too interesting to normal people. Not recommended."

@davecarter not surprised at all.

@cloudthethings pretty nice tbh. good inbuit cable management.

motherboard power socket needs plugging in before doing top cooler. got caught out by that, but that's it.

Best LEGAL way to buy knew Windows keys these days?

(Just in case my current one decides all the parts i'm putting in count as too much of a system change)

ME: I'm really, really torn on whether to just replace my motherboard or replatform to AM5. But that would mean I'd need a new case and all cases today are RGB messes designed for edgelord teens who-

@schmerg yes. Because the side panels to my current one are lost to history and I have cats.

@Kavus technically no, but my old case is in a bad state.

Today's bit of computing history, and a hint of what's coming in my next tech history column.

This small article in the 8th June 1981 issue of Infoworld caused absolute panic in Microsoft and IBM.

Because it accurately predicted the release and details of the PC, 4 months before it became official

@talexb loooooads of them scanned in and available on google books.

A fun way to occasionally lose an afternoon!

Yeeeah.

After lots of possible failure point elimination yesterday, I think it's new motherboard time.

Tested different SSDs and RAM with fresh installs of Windows each time and fully up-to-date drivers. Issue of multiple BSODs, all memory access related, returns.

Dmp files not showing a program consistently causing the issue, either.

Couple that with a RAM stick randomly failing last week, and that increasingly says 'board issue' to me.

@BernardSheppard yeah.

my thinking there is that if ii get a new motherboard/cpu and t's the PSU, well at least i ended up with useful upgrades.

whereas if i get a PSU first and it's the motherboard, i've ended up with a redundant PSU.

Well that was fun. One of my sticks of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 just nuked itself on stream.

Good job I speak BIOS beep. Now limping along on a single stick.

What DDR4 are the non-cool kids buying these days?

(EDIT: I'm running an AMD Ryzen 7 3800X on a Prime X570-P for reference)

(Because the cool kids mostly prefer shiny to good)

@derryh yeah, i'm running the crucial tool to see what it comes back with.

worst case i'll just go Corsair again

Think this is maybe the most feels short story I've ever written.

Came about because I was watching an old Cosmos episode and started thinking about light speed, and how that might affect the last letter a person could send in war.

Should probably add a trigger warning for dads, prior to reading.

Last week this wikipedia page was a single paragraph.

Now it isn't.

The proudest you can ever be as a writer is knowing you made someone deserving more visible than they were before.

I am delighted to see her finally get a small measure of the attention and recognition she deserves.

@jessamyn oh I can't claim credit for updating the wiki directly! Kudos to whichever contributor did that.

I just wrote this piece about her on Monday as part of my 'Crazy Ones' column, to try and highlight how grossly overlooked by the general Silicon Valley history narrative she's been.

I pointed out her single paragraph on wikipedia in that. Been wonderful getting to add a footnote saying that's now changed. 😁
