I hate having to ask this especially as I’m in the muddle of promoting my new live show, but I won’t get paid for that for a while, and this month has been particularly tough, I’m about £500 short of my rent which was due yesterday. I’m up to the limit of my overdraft and have 99p left. So if you can help even a couple of pounds then my ko-fi is https://www.ko-fi.com/bethanyblack and if you could use paypal I get the money immediately.

The publisher of a small imprint of roleplaying games magazines/speculative fiction shuts down after 22 years because their submissions have been flooded with AI to the extent they cannot wade through them:

“The problem with AI is the people who use AI. These are people who think their ‘ideas’ are more important than the actual craft of writing, so they churn out all these ‘ideas’ and enter their idea prompts and think the output is a story.”

The combination of very large claims about productivity of customer advisors with the cutesy language and logo here is very unnerving.

> Caddy bases its advice on documentation provided to it.

The software is not "providing advice", it is producing plausible text strings in response to the prompt its given. I'm actually persuadable that this might make it useful software, but not if the people making the software appear to be confused about whether that software is capable of thinking.

So, researching the story of the somewhat bizare story of 5 1/4 still being used on San Francisco trains:

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/5-25-inch-floppy-disks-expected-to-help-run-san-francisco-trains-until-2030/

Can any of you folks tell me if a floppy emulator would help here, like a GoTek, is such a thing possible for 5 1/4” disks?

Boosts appreciated!

Last week this wikipedia page was a single paragraph.

Now it isn't.

The proudest you can ever be as a writer is knowing you made someone deserving more visible than they were before.

I am delighted to see her finally get a small measure of the attention and recognition she deserves.

@jessamyn oh I can't claim credit for updating the wiki directly! Kudos to whichever contributor did that.

I just wrote this piece about her on Monday as part of my 'Crazy Ones' column, to try and highlight how grossly overlooked by the general Silicon Valley history narrative she's been.

I pointed out her single paragraph on wikipedia in that. Been wonderful getting to add a footnote saying that's now changed. 😁

The old church at Aldwincle (All Saints). It was declared redundant in 1976, and has been made into an architectural museum.

Kinda had to be about 200+ mtrs from this to get it in frame, as I only had my 560mm birding lens with me. 😂

Because of Arizona’s horrendous abortion ruling today, every event planner I know is going to cross another state off their list of “places we can hold conferences and offsites that support emergency healthcare procedures if they arise with any of our employees while they are there”.

mathowie,
@mathowie@xoxo.zone avatar

Imagine you're Salesforce with 75,000 employees and you do a winter offsite and an employee is suddenly having complications from an ectopic pregnancy while there. They can't be helped in any local hospital so do they fly home immediately while hoping they survive the flight? Does the family get to sue the company for taking the employee to a place that ultimately caused their death?

These are real situations we have to explore when you reinstitute a 160 year old law banning procedures.

DELIGHTED to say that my latest tech history column is live on Every and they've made this one free-to-read.

Because it covers one of the most overlooked founders of the golden age of computing: Lore Harp McGovern, founder of Vector Graphic who pioneered small/medium business computing.

She deserves to be better known. Certainly deserves more than a single paragraph on Wikipedia. Read and spread the word https://every.to/the-crazy-ones/the-woman-that-tech-history-forgot

Adam Osborne is a forgotten giant of computing. Steve Jobs first true rival and a friend. A man who struggled with his identity: was he British, American or Indian?

In my new column 'The Crazy Ones' over at Every, you'll find a full history of Adam Osborne and the rise and fall of Osborne Computers.

The number of outlets prepared to pay for longform tech history journalism is tiny. So please do read, enjoy and spread the word... #computing #history #histodons

It's all going wrong here in the UK, in terms of 4K releases related to James Cameron.

The Abyss has been cancelled due to censorship issues.
True Lies is still coming out in March.
Aliens, which was also due in March, has now been given a placeholder date of Dec 31st?!

Personally, The Abyss is the only one worth getting. The transfers on the other two are shocking.
