gutter564,

Thanks! Looking forward to my early cyclone, early sea rise, early drought next!

privacy android rom for Samsung phone from Latin America

I live in Latin America and I found out here governements dont require Samsung to OEM lock bootloader for Samsung phones, so thecnically im able to boot a custom rom unto my phone. But Im curious if this still enables us Samsung users from Latin America to boot any privacy respecting android rom, since most of them doesnt...

gutter564,

I have /e/OS on s7 and s9

gutter564,

Yes it works nicely and I disagree with the above, think it looks fantastic

gutter564,

I did nothing and my (Linux) system broke! Beat that Windows! Thank god for Snapper.

Privacy basics, can anyone help?

Hello there! Im looking for increased privacy when it comes to my network connections. So far I know of TOR as an almost absolute bastion of security, but how do I ensure the remaining network traffic is encrypted and private? I know of signal for communication, and I’m aware of VPN’s. However I’m not sure whether to trust...

gutter564,

Some more info and helpful blogs from mullvad mullvad.net/…/all-about-dns-servers-and-privacy/

You can use quad9 or mullvad DNS resolvers for free to prevent DNS leaks

gutter564,

If you want a VPN I would recommended Mullvad and pay with with Crypto

gutter564,

Semi related but there has been so much anti VPN stuff of late on the web. I blame the big vpn providers for their miss marketing and poor ads from sponsoring deals. The repercussions are making it out like vpns are not useful. Noone thought they were silver bullet before. now they are made out to be a waste of money? All the “you don’t need a VPN” stuff needs to stop. Im concerned people are gonna stop caring about anonymity and enhancing privacy with VPN.

gutter564,

Welcome to Garuda. First change the icons if you don’t like them.

I would just look around and read about Garuda. Not much else tbh. It just works

gutter564,

It’s okay, Rishi will make sure they’re alright 😃

gutter564,

This is probably what happened. If you use Google, YouTube and Chrome and esp if you are logged into ur Google account those don’t matter too much…

The discord vc isn’t private but listening to a conversation in real time and picking out key points, who said what and then translating that to recommendations seems a challenge but not impossible. A speech model could do this but that would be quite insane. It seems more likely that the recommendation was based of off previous searches and predicted correctly.

If Dc was listening like that I would expect to see some weird shit cos I talk random stuff in dc voice

gutter564,

None atm. DNS over HTTPS cos im poor using mullvad’s DNS server instead of VPN . Makes it bit more difficult for my ISP

What non-FOSS software are you using that you wish you could replace?

For me its honestly a ton of my work software (digital forensics), shit is too niche to be replaced by good FOSS options. Cellebrite, Magnet Axiom, etc. Autopsy is great and free and has a linux version but it simply cannot get the same level of data without a pretty nutty level of custom code....

gutter564,

You can use Gmaps WV to use GMaps without an Google account at least

gutter564,

Geddit is not bad front end. No reddit account needed

gutter564,

I believe there is Code OSS for VS

gutter564,

Paraphrasing our Lord and saviour Mental Outlaw, convincing normies to use Signal is the hard part. And so I have to use ZuckApp

gutter564,

Me when Overwatch just works on Garuda after getting 0.5 fps on other distros.

If you don't mind me asking what is so important about privacy?

What harm does public data have to you? Couldn’t one just ignore the ads? You can’t see anyone watching you, is public data good for public records? (I’m just curious). I know this sounds weird but is public data good for historical preservation and knowledge increasing the importance of the individual? And does public...

gutter564,

I would add that privacy and security are related. If there is less data on you, it is harder to commit fraud against you.

gutter564,

Where are the metric units? All I see is prefixes explained
