That's wild! Would you mind sharing more about the process? My wife knits a lot so I know something like this would be really difficult with traditional color work but I'm not sure how you achieved it.

Three for three in the last 14 years on creating workflows requested by employers without ANY additional compensation ... how the fuck is one supposed to make a comfortable living?

In 2012, I was working for an audiobook publisher on ePub conversion that added audio. For whatever reason, that project got shelved, so I was moved into audio auditing....

Alright waited until the weekend so I could write this one because it might be long we'll see.

First off, I'm sorry you've had to deal with all this bullshit. I changed jobs last year, and even as someone who was getting interest and interviews in my search, it still made me want to scream pretty much the whole time, and it took like 9 months at varying levels of intensity. I can't imagine how frustrating putting in all that work and getting what seems to be worse than nothing back has been.

Second, I want to echo some of the comments in this thread emphasizing that some less traditional career paths may be open to you. The idea to apply at LMG is great, as is the possibility of freelancing. If you haven't already, you could also consider contract roles. When I was looking there were lots of recruiters trying to pick people up for technical jobs on 6-12 month contract. That may be different now, or you may have your reasons for not considering them just like I did, so I understand if it's not an option or if you've already considered it. If it works for you though, an employer may be less strict on what they think is the "right" background for a role if they know it's only for a shorter time. Also, I think I saw some discussion from you about considering a van lifestyle, which could be pretty compatible with freelancing or moving place to place for contract work, so that is something to account for as well.

Third, I want to encourage you not to give up. Employers frankly suck, and in the absence of better labor organization, changing jobs is the best way to get what you need. Even if all you can do for a week or a month at a time is the super simple instant apply stuff on places like LinkedIn, that's still progress. Or if you need to take a break for a while to keep yourself sane and make sure you're at your best when you do have a new opportunity, that's also a valuable use of your time. And if you represent yourself even half as well in interviews as you do in your writing I'm sure you can make a good impression, the challenge is getting in front of the right people.

Lastly, I actually want to thank you for this post. Job hunting is a super important aspect of personal finance that I'm not super able to write my own posts on since I'm pretty early in my career. I have been thinking of making a weekly discussion thread for this community, so if you want to continue to vent or journal about your search then it would be great to have more posts, either as standalone posts like this one or comments on the discussion thread.

That may have been unclear. I didn't consider contract roles and am working a remote, direct hire role currently. The reasons contract roles were not for me are:

  1. A lot of contract roles wanted me to move. While in my line of work I can be remote with no issues, my wife can't move her work for another few years at least, so moving is not really an option. I also want to work from home since that's essentially all I've done in my career due to starting during the pandemic.
  2. I'm a pretty risk averse person, so the idea of taking a job knowing I'd possibly have to do more job hunting in the future because the contact ended was not appealing. Of course, if I hadn't seen much interest from direct hire opportunities this probably would have been negotiable.
  3. My wife has some pretty expensive specialty medication that she can't go off of, and it seemed to me like health insurance benefits for contract work are not as good. Sometimes this extended to other benefits like 401k, but sometimes health insurance was the main aspect that was lacking.

‘A sense of betrayal’: liberal dismay as Muslim-led US city bans Pride flags (web.archive.org)

In 2015, many liberal residents in Hamtramck, Michigan, celebrated as their city became the first in the United States to elect a Muslim-majority city council. They viewed the power shift and diversity as a meaningful rebuke of the Islamophobic rhetoric of then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign. This...

This comment could stand to be nicer and/or more open to further discussion, like some of the others in the thread. Please try to incorporate that into your future comments.

Not a direct answer to your question, but if you can upload the images elsewhere and link to here, that would be best. Storage is the biggest server expense and image hosting drives that up a lot long term.

The thing that upsets me most about this article is that when I try other search engines, I still find myself needing to use Google to find certain things. Usually that's information or questions and not products, but if it's this bad for Google I can't imagine it's any easier on the others.

Probably want to play with enemies off though. I find with enemies on the constant possibility of attack makes it hard to focus on audio content, plus combat requires your attention when it happens.

Hey y'all, this is a great post, but please try to keep topics relating to the reddit blackout on the appropriate megathread, which should be pinned here: https://beehaw.org/post/550898

Going to lock this to focus further discussion.

Hey, not sure if you're maybe more used to Mastodon or something, but the hashtags in the title don't have any particular effect here. Not sure what your goal with them was exactly, but figured I'd let you know.

No clue, I'm not on Mastodon, but maybe.

I agree with you that it could use a qualifier there. That said, given how often the opposite sentiment of money will make you happy is thrown around even among the wealthy, I don't think it ruins the article.

Do you suffer from anxiety about climate change and its effects?

Suffer from is a strong way of phrasing it, but yeah it's one of the things that makes me a little nervous about the future along with US politics 🙃

Have you ever made significant individual lifestyle choices because of climate change?

Yes. I drive a Prius when I have to, I work from home, I'm moving from a rented duplex back into an apartment complex for energy efficiency and walkability in no small part, and I try not to eat too much meat.

Have you ever thought of leaving where you live because of potential future climactic effects? Have you actually moved already because of them?

I mean I don't love where I live currently, it's too hot already and doesn't have a lot of the cultural stuff that I like, plus the state politics are the kind that make me nervous. Planning to move in a few years when I am able to somewhere more amenable in all of those ways.

Do you think the world can limit global warming to 1.5C or 2C? Where do you think we’ll “level off” in terms of warming–especially if you don’t think we’ll meet either of those goals?

Can, absolutely. Will? Maybe. Technology is getting crazy and it's only set to get crazier, and largely the cost battle has been won in favor of renewables already. Failing that, I think the hearts and minds of young people are already broadly on the right track, it's just going to take longer for them to make a difference.

What do you think of proposed technologies like carbon capture? Do you think they’re useful, or a technocratic waste of time? Can they be viably used at large scale on any reasonable timeframe?

On one hand, I think we're at the point where we've got to consider everything. If things turn out to be worse than we expect, and they look like they'll be pretty bad, then we have got to have some tools like that to try and salvage things. On the other hand, carbon capture especially I think is used to justify more fossil fuel use now, with the thought that the carbon can just be captured later, which I don't love.

Do you support something like climate reparations either now or in the future? Do you think such a thing is even viable?

I don't know really. I think wealthy countries should absolutely help poorer countries leapfrog fossil fuels and get directly to clean energy, but I'm not sure that's the same thing.

I've had better weeks. One of my guinea pigs who has been sick for a while got sick enough that she had to be put down, with the added bonus that this became obvious about 15 minutes before I had to go meet my new landlord to pick up the keys to my new apartment. On the plus side, moving into the new apartment has been easy, I thought I would need to do a lot of back and forth to move stuff before the movers come to take the big things, but seems like that's mostly done. Also, my other guinea pig is doing well despite the loss of her friend, so that is good also.
