Many people even in the United States pronounce WEB DuBois as WEB DuBoi. While we can guess why that is, it is nonetheless extremely arrogant of Gayatri Spivak to reprimand someone at a public event in India for getting the pronunciation wrong. You are being angry at the wrong people.
BTW National Dastak used the word Bahujan in their tweet to describe their platform; when translating it to English, Scroll changed it to Dalit. It doesn't make any sense.
@seachanger Oh! I don't know the local nuances so I may have misread the politics of the show but I generally like news dramas and this one did a good job from that pov.
As the US government moves to ban TikTok and Twitter becomes progressively irrelevant platform, I am thinking what questions it raises for communication scholars.
I was reading a bunch of internet studies last week and many of them sounded so dated. Academic research, compared to say journalism, is supposed to have a longer shelf life. But if our research becomes dated in just 4-5 years, are we doing something wrong?
I feel comm scholars should write keeping in mind that the platform they are writing about, can die anytime. And the arguments should be broader enough that they should interest readers even if the platform were to die or go into irrelevance. @communicationscholars
The BJP MP's comment about changing the constitution to suit Hindu religion may seem extreme. But that's how the BJP normalizes extreme speech, with slow drip, and slowly builds consensus for such things. #India
This is what the BJP parliamentarian said, "You all must help BJP to win over 400 seats. Why does the BJP need 400+ seats? Congress leaders in the past made changes to the constitution and made it in a way that it doesn’t put Hinduism in front. We need to change it and save our religion. We already have a two-thirds majority in Lok Sabha, and we do not have that in Rajya Sabha to amend the constitution. 400+ numbers will help us achieve that."
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is BJP's prominent Brahmin leader, tweeted on Monday that serving the Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas is the duty of the Shudras, citing a verse in Bhagavad Gita. Brahmin pandits have historically slotted all agrarian castes and below as Shudras. #caste
