Serious question: How do #LFC and wider #MastodonFC / #EPL fans here on Mastodon feel about Klopp's call for a replay?

Seems like a PR own goal to me as a Spurs fan. He seems to be coming in for quite a bit of stick and ridicule from the wider footballing world.

I'm loving Chris Cowlin's response. And Jan Vertonghen shows what a legend he is. Trent Alexander-Arnold's "have to move forward and put it behind us" comment is mature, too.

According to this analysis of VAR decisions for the 22/23 season, Liverpool were the joint second beneficiaries of VAR decisions, while City were bottom.

So why do #LFC fans believe there is a conspiracy against them? Where does that belief stem from?

Interesting how much vulnerability Levy is showing here. Not entirely sure how authentic it is. But it acknowledges what I believe are some truths regarding "trophy now" managers and Spurs.

Particularly interested is the "pressure from maybe some players" ... Kane, maybe?

I've long been of the opinion Kane became too big individually for the club. The narrative that HE should be winning trophies were an outsized influence on what the team and the club needed. IMHO.

Vermeeren update

Why is there this almost frenzied attention on a "Kane replacement"?

Anyone paying attention knows that Kane was not ideal for Ange's system (some say more of a nuisance) and that he's not seeking a "replacement". It's a ridiculous red-herring to fixate on a striker now. Instead the media should be talking about what sort of striker Postecoglou needs and where our team weaknesses are. We won't know that until deep into the season.

Is Son one of the best finishers EVER? Let's look at some data. 👇

We use actual goals minus expected goals (xG) as a proxy for finishing skill. Players who consistently score more than their xG means they are scoring goals other players would miss. Generally, only the most elite goalscorers consistently outperform their xG.

And I can find no player who consistently beats Son. It's astonishing.

If #LFC fans are feeling hard done by this early in the season when still all to play for, imagine how it feels to be done over in a Champions League final.

It hurts. Take it on the chin. Move on. Klopp's team is good enough to ride it. He has a history of resilience in the face of (unjustified) poor results.

FWIW I sincerely think the reds and Diaz's disallowed goal spoiled the game.

But those rash challenges are a bit of a theme against Spurs.

Friendly Masto #Arsenal fans: there was a strong narrative before #NLD that Spurs would get battered if we rocked up and played Angeball.

We did that and, credit where it's due, Arsenal played well, pressed savagely, and it caused problems. You just lacked clinical finishing, I think. But this nascent project of Ange's didn't get battered. Far from it.

I'm interested why you were so sure we'd get smoked. What were the most surprising aspects of the performance for you?

Brave or naive? That seems to be the question on many people's lips.

I say neither.

I believe it was a didactic method Ange has honed over the years. An exercise in trust, like the classic of someone standing behind to catch you as you fall.

Ange needs his players to believe and to trust and to see that the consequences of failure in his system are nothing to fear.
