asks for donations to reach half of their CEO's yearly salary, while people are getting laid off. Seems to me that the solution is simple.

[edit] Okay, this has gotten a lot of buzz, and I'm happy people respectfully weighed in with arguments and counterarguments. I'm not giving up on and , nor on other initiatives for a better web. I am, however, going to be muting this now.

@kerfuffle @Vivaldi It's really important to critique Mozilla like this. But it's also really important to not conflate the browser and project with the CEO and suggest a solution of switching to a Chromium-based browser. The independence of Firefox and it's resistance to some of the more nasty degredations being introduced (such as diminishing the capability of ad-blocking extensions) is absolutely essential to an open web.

Kane is “so impressive”. Tuchel and his No 9 are beaming after first Bayern goal https://theathletic.com/4788830/2023/08/19/kane-debut-bayern-harry/

So, Royal is a centre back again and Hojbjerg is in for 6. An understandable and, dare-I-say PRAGMATIC selection from Ange.

To help football fans find their communities, I've put together a spreadsheet listing (for now) teams, their hashtags, and associated groups.

I've enabled comments. Would be great if you could let me know if anything is incorrect or if there's a preferred hashtag or group for your club community here on Mastodon and the wider .

Boosts much appreciated. Thanks!

It's the opposite of doom scrolling.

It's good vibes joy scrolling.

Long may it continue. 🤍

One thing I think everyone is surprised about this season (including Ange to a certain degree) is how quickly the squad got up to speed with his tactics. Commentators said it would take time to "click".

But it seems to have mostly clicked right away. Not perfect, but they seem to be clicking.

Is that perhaps because the squad starts from a position of excellent Ventrone baseline fitness? They can handle the required intensity of Angeball over 90+ mins.

Jermaine Jenas and seems terribly confused.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/67537680

A severely depleted Spurs using their "b-side" put in a positive performance against a settled and very good Aston Villa and could easily have won, yet Ange was "naive" and needs to adapt. He then waffles on about how good Spurs were and how Aston Villa weren't that impressive.

What exactly would Ange adapt to? What would make him less naive?

We lack players and that's not the manager's fault.

Not sure I can cope with a second half of that.

Hojbjerg on.

Trying to exert some control?

Not feeling positive.

Tottenham v Sheffield summary

2-1

  • Goals from Richarlison and Kulusevski in added time

  • We dominated but lacked a clinical edge

  • Sonny couldn't get in the game

  • Starting XI were not ideal for Sheffield IMO

  • Sheffield were well organised defensively

  • Sheffield wasted time and it justifiably came back to bite them

  • Several bad refereeing decisions

  • A warrior's mentality snatched a well deserved win.

  • Best start to season since 1965

I know some people don't like hashtags. Particularly Twitter and possibly Bluesky users too. Some seem to be almost offended by them. But as metadata – a way of enhancing the portability of messages across networks, they sure are useful. Not only a means to opt in to specific messages, but also mute and opt out. They allow for quantification of messages based on tag/topic. They're much more reliable than keyword searches (but perhaps AI will change that).

Randomly browsing Google Maps & saw this interesting change:

  • Selecting a place highlights the building
  • Small green arrows appearing, seems to indicate possible entrances/exits
  • Upon further inspection, seems like they could be derived from Street View imagery

Place: Telok Blangah Crescent Market & Food Centre, Singapore.

Screen recording of Telok Blangah Crescent Market & Food Centre being zoomed in on Google Maps iOS app.

hallenbeck,
@hallenbeck@mastodon.online avatar

@cheeaun

Is this not derived from the questions Maps occasionally asks about where the entrance to places is?

hallenbeck,
@hallenbeck@mastodon.online avatar

@cheeaun yeah from time to time. I use Maps a LOT, though, so maybe I get more than the average person. I didn't think about the street view folk that walk about. Almost all of the street view stuff I'm familiar with is from cars driving about. I guess in urban and pedestrian zones, it must be people. I was aware too of people on bikes (trikes, I think?) riding around.

@cheeaun Does the catch-up thing not show boosts from Guppe groups on purpose? Technical limitation? Would love to be able to group by group. 🙂

hallenbeck,
@hallenbeck@mastodon.online avatar

@cheeaun
Maybe because the groups I use are in lists excluded from home timeline?

There aren't many sports journalists on . Most take the lazy option because it looks and feels a bit like Twitter. Even more just stay on that sinking ship while the band plays on. Jason deserves a follow here for making the effort.

Please boost for reach if you can. 🙏

Quick question: is it worth continuing with the stuff here on Masto?

The community seems to be shrinking while Bluesky continues to grow.

Does it matter?

What is it that Bluesky offers that Masto doesn't?

I've come to realise it's quality of connections on social media that matters rather than volume. So perhaps it being relatively quiet here is a plus?

It has been very quiet of late, though. Perhaps it's just because we've been playing badly?

hallenbeck,
@hallenbeck@mastodon.online avatar

@SwellWines @spurs Btw, if anyone wants a Mastodon experience that looks more like Twitter and Bluesky (or you're looking to recommend Masto to someone leaving Twitter/Bluesky), check out https://indieweb.social/. It uses @rolle's excellent Bird Site UI theme (https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui) and is run by @tchambers, one of the most decent, smart, thoughtful, and active fedi admins around.

Plenty more instances that use Bird Site UI here: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui?tab=readme-ov-file#list-of-instances-that-use-mastodon-bird-ui
