Thats why I report these posts as the propaganda they are and always try to counter them in the comments. Just doing my part as much as I can. I’m already on my own instance so I cant just be banned for it if someone gets bought by meta (its not the only reason but one of them).

And so on and so forth. The language is shaping the story in one direction as if nobody has a chance to change something about it.

I get your point and that is your right. I still dont agree and that is my right. There have been countless examples of underestimating a bad actor until they were already in the space.

Addiction is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by a persistent and intense urge to use a drug or engage in a behaviour that produces natural reward, despite substantial harm and other negative consequences.

If you employ psychologists and other specialists to design something for maximum retention, you‘re not making something „entertaining“, you‘re tricking the brain into a loop.

We could discuss this endlessly but suffice it to say that there are techniques for retention that dont make an experience necessarily better but more captivating. Infinite scrolling is a very simple example. i bet some game designers could shine a pretty bright light on this if they stumble across this thread.

I could abstract this to the real world like so: two people can speak exactly the same text but one cares if their audience is getting tired and stops, the other one speaks a little louder and turns on some more lights. I‘m pretty sure you will get a significantly longer retention despite the quality being the exact same.

And this is why methods for retention need to be carefully screened and regulated.

I dont like you stating things as if they were an objective truth. It is your opinion that infinite scrolling is “good” or whatever you wanted to say. But it is a retention method and not just a QoL feature. There are articles explaining this and some websites have expressly disabled it because it leads to problems for people who are vulnerable.

I use NC (and am happy with it) but I get the „too complicated“ and „too many features“ argument. Imo its only for people who really want to degoogle or get away from iCloud completely as it has so many features and plugins that you could run a company with it. Its absolutely overkill for just syncing photos.

Edit: What I will say though is that I had a similar problem with a mod suite for a minecraft server which was wayyy too much for what I needed - at first. So I ended up with a basic solution, later splicing on feature after feature until I ended up with the same setup, just more complicated and buggier. Maybe what I‘m trying to say „NC maybe just isnt for you, yet.“

I wrote a custom script to update it so I can very much understand that sentiment. I‘m also not the largest fan of the service just randomly breaking every couple of weeks and then having to run my update script. I‘m running the linuxserver docker compose version iirc.

The issue for me is that the docker update alone doesnt do it. I have no idea why and at this point I‘m to tired to care.

Well, I bought the game so i own it (IP shills can shut it). If it stops working on my linux machine, I will pirate it. And I will start distributing it to others who bought it but cant play it. Which is probably even legal where I live due to consumer protection laws.
