Raiding my old sticker stash for HalfStack conference this Wednesday in London. Wanted to do this for years, and finally remembered before leaving for London.

Went to the Apple Park Store in Cupertino. It was busy, so I asked what was happening today. She looked at me funny, trying to figure out if I was serious.

Then I told her I already ordered my new phone and I need to pick it up tomorrow in the morning. She asked: in this store?

No, in Amsterdam…. Not sure if she believed me.

Wow! What a nice surprise. I definitely did not expect to be featured in the Bootcamp keynote for my work on the Salonhub demo at I/O Connect.

Arrived in Amsterdam. While waiting for our checked suitcase I noticed the check-in for my next flight had already opened.

Heading towards San Francisco tomorrow for the bootcamp. Staying at the airport tonight. Just need to repack my suitcases tomorrow and we’re flying to the US again.

Just passed airport security and on my way back from HalfStack Vienna. I just wish I could get a copy of the x-ray scan of my suitcase full of point of sale devices. It looked so cool when I briefly saw it. The security agents looked very confused.

html5test,
@html5test@mastodon.social avatar

The fight is completely full and they ask to check-in hand luggage.

Me: Okay, but this suitcase - points to the one with my demos - is full of electronics.

Him: Can you take it out?

Me: I could but the suitcase would be completely empty then. 😬

So…. We checked one suitcase.

Been through this before. Once on a smaller plane with no overhead storage. So my suitcase travelled first class. I asked to switch places, but they refused.

Yesterday I did a talk about Project Fugu and cash registers at Halfstack Vienna.

Learn how you can use WebUSB, WebSerial and WebHID to connect to Point of Sale devices. And you'll learn everything you ever wanted to know about receipt printers, and more. Much more. In excruciating detail.

When I was in China last week I learnt that Samsung took over the development of Adobe Air.

@paul

I am so glad that we transitioned away from Adobe AIR to Electron a couple of years ago. It started out great, but it turned out to be a disaster.

And I can’t wait to start the transition from Electron to a PWA. Almost all the pieces of the puzzle are in place, thanks to Project Fugu.

What's your favorite film era manual focus lens? I just got my first Helios 44, and it's hard not to like. Looking for compact zoom recommendations!

html5test,
@html5test@mastodon.social avatar

@jukkaeklund The Helios 44-2 is definitely a favorite.

html5test,
@html5test@mastodon.social avatar

@jukkaeklund But the Jupiter 8 50mm f/2 is also great. It’s tiny in comparison, but it has great character.

html5test,
@html5test@mastodon.social avatar

@jukkaeklund other ones I like are the Canon FD 135mm f/2.8, the Pentacon 50mm f/1.8 and the Meyer Optik Görlitz Domiplan 50mm f/2.8

html5test,
@html5test@mastodon.social avatar

@jukkaeklund oh, that is a great one too.

One week until HalfStack Vienna!

My first proper new talk in 3 years. Going all out with unnecessary detail, history of point of sale devices, 1980's references, cutting edge web technology, live demo's and suitcase full of gadgets.

I just pre-ordered three limited edition copies of the album Sick Boi by Ren…. And I don’t even own a CD player anymore.

https://www.sickboialbum.com

I have been totally obsessed with his music lately. I don’t think there has been a day in the last six months that I didn’t listen to his songs.

So ... revise the z-index chapter of the book.

I need a collective name for "elements that obey their z-index"/"elements on which it makes sense to set z-index".

Most elements ignore their z-index, after all, and when I explain in which situations that happens and does not happen it's useful to have a name.

I thought the name was "stacking item", but it appears that I made up that name, then forgot I made it up.

Suggestions?

html5test,
@html5test@mastodon.social avatar

@ppk the first thing that came to mind is Stacking Context, but that is broader. That includes all elements that allow a numeric z-index, but also elements that have opacity less than 1 and elements with filters and transforms, etc.

Not sure there is a name for it.

Positioned elements, flex items and grid items?

Back in Billund visiting the Lego House. And I just bought the Lego Friends Botanical Garden and it probably the nicest looking set I’ve seen in a while. 🤩

It seems like I’ll be back in the US sooner than expected. Booked my flight for San Francisco for the 18th of September. A couple of days there and back again at the end of the week.

Anyone else I know going to SF that week? And what should I definitely do while I’m there?

I constantly get notifications from Find My that my AirPods are following me. It is really annoying. Nothing helped fix it. So I live with it. 😡

Today I forgot them in my hotel and I did not get a notification. Nothing. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Yeah, this Find Me stuff works great 👍🏻

😭 Sad morning for me and the rest of the @Fronteersconference team.

Despite an amazing line-up and big plans, there were simply not enough ticket sales to continue. We're very sorry to all the speakers and everybody who did buy a ticket. It really meant a lot. Thank you so much for all the support.

New macOS & iOS app:

Aiko — High-quality on-device transcription

html5test,

@sindresorhus This looks amazing. Maybe a niche use-case, but with live transcription this would be really useful for subtitling talks at conferences.

Larger conferences usually hire somebody to do it manually, but especially conferences on a budget could really benefit from this and improve accessibility and inclusivity.
