Do I know anyone who

organises hackathons?

Preferably not in German-speaking countries; we already have those.

@jessie @proactivepaul Thanks for the pointer!

@proactivepaul No hurry, you're on my list now.

Schedule for CSS Day 2024 is up. Even the speaker don't know yet, so this is, like, a total scoop.

(And we're sold out; no more tickets available.)

Oh, and the slides of my presentation are up at

@bartnv Coil was more like a proof of concept. Question: Are people interested in Web Monetization as a system? The answer appears to be Yes, and that's great!

But Coil worked with "donations" that you gave to them and they gave to website owners because Coil wasn't recognised as a bank or bank-adjacent entity, and thus had no right to touch your money.

@bartnv It was solving this particular problem that took us years - regulatory authorities aren't what anyone would call quick.

But now we have wallets that are recognised as bank-like thingies in some countries, and we can start running real Web Monetization - as soon as the last kinks are worked out of the browser extension.

I like the web monetisation proposal being brought forward by @ppk:

  • Beloved sites get sold and dropped or "eaten by AI", and the reason is money.
  • For those willing, a trickling micro payment stream could send a few cents every few seconds from a reader's wallet to that of a website owner.
  • The readers would control their max rate and max outlay per month, for example.
  • The readers could block certain sites/domains from receiving money.
  • There are still lots of open questions!

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@michelle @sarajw The visibilitychange event is our friend.

However, that event only fires if every single pixel of the page is covered or otherwise invisible.

So the use case where the tab is not entirely hidden is a lot more difficult. In the end it's likely going to be a timeout: if the user hasn't interacted for X time the monetization stream is stopped.

@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@michelle @sarajw Once the system actually works I won't stop talking about it and you'll eventually have to mute me.

Preparing for my sponsored 30 minute lunch session about at at 13:00.

It's actually going to be the first time in nearly seven years that I present something at a conference.

Current ICE to Düsseldorf and @btconf . A d this is first class, mind you.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@btconf I made it to the hotel- - and from Duisburg on I even had a 1st class chair.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@btconf I will probably come to Sipgate later - though right now I'm being lazy.

I'm in the market for a new CLICKER - my old one, which I bought for SxSW 2007, has finally given up the ghost.

Mac/Keynote. Preferably USB-C.

Any tips? Best/worst?

I really do not understand what is going on with . It seems like he brought this on himself by reneging on green pledges and thereby sabotaging the coalition with the Green Party? What was he thinking? Or am I not understanding? https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/apr/29/humza-yousaf-steps-down-as-scottish-first-minister-snp

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@torgo I have the same question. He trashes his own coalition - and that's always bad.

Whoever breaks a coalition pays the price, and that's what we're now seeing. Not just Yousef himself but the entire SNP will be punished by the voters. Unless the rules over there are very different ...

So what was he thinking? Why not make life so unpleasant for the Greens that they quit of their own accord?

Strange poll. 26% of US voters may change their minds, while 66% won't.

So 8% of US voters don't know if they may change their minds or not ... ?

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@zachleat Or not speaking at all and hitting people with the stick. It is proven to be remarkably effective.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@zachleat That's exactly the sort of attitude a stick-centered approach can adjust.

We use self-closing syntax in HTML where it doesn't do anything. People see it and assume it does something.

Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?

https://www.reddit.com/r/webdev/comments/1cceb03/i_thought_i_knew_html_until_i_saw_this/

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@jaffathecake Because front-end engineers should appear much more complicated than it actually is. That's the theme of the past 15 years.
