I work at a Museum but chase auroras for fun. Springer spaniel fan.

@iangriffin A query. I'm trying to work out if I can save enough to see the 2028 eclipse. To make it doubly exciting, how far out can you tell if it's likely to be a good aurora season?

Off on a tangent: If there's sunspot activity at the same time as an eclipse, would you see the aurora when it went dark?

@iangriffin@mastodon.nz avatar

@Purupuss Well 2028 is probably past the next solar max (projected for 2024/25). However auroras do occur throughout the solar cycle. So chances will be less to see an aurora in 2028 but not impossible. Yes, if aurora is strong enough you could see one during the eclipse. But sun will be setting in the west so will need a wide angle lens to spot it!

So... if you are in Wellington on 8th May, I'm giving a talk "Adventures in astronomy". Admission is free!

Final slide. People love the museum. Shame local council and government think of us as a financial transaction rather than an investment.

This slide makes me (ever so slightly) mad. National Museum receives more than 10 times Otago Museum funding.

So today I made Tūhura Otago Museum's submission to Dunedin City Council. We are seeking a 5% increase in funding next year so we can pay the living wage and get some seismic work done and install sprinklers to protect our collection. Here are the slides 1/x

i'm particularly interested in comparing rates in 1997 with those paid today!

Hey.. I know Mastodon is full of smart folks. Can anyone point me to a site/database that shows what the DCC rates were in Dunedin back in time?

Save Shortland Street or divert its huge media funding to heritage and Museums? I know what I'd do. #deathtobadacting #museums

My new "toy" arrived today. It's an 18mm f/11 "fisheye" lens for my Pentax MX camera. Purchased for a project involving suntrails and startrails.

one from the archives. Jupiter as seen from my back garden, and from the Hubble Telescope. Set up costs: My garden ~$2000, Hubble ~$5 billion.

Just for fun, last night after the comet chase and despite the bright moonlight, I took a few test images using my GFX50SII camera using a 50-year-old 200mm Pentax lens. there's some trailing due to Alt-az mount but I'm quite pleased with this image of the LMC

Here is another picture from tonight's road trip to photograph comet Pons-Brooks. Bit of a challenge actually. 1-hour drive, 2 telescopes to set up, and the bloody comet would just be 2 degrees high an hour after sunset. But there was nothing on TV so why not.

@Pepijn not rude at all. It’s a rubbish shot but the technical achievement of imaging a 5th magnitude comet a degree above the horizon is what I’ll dine out on with my astronomy nerd friends for ages.

@iangriffin@mastodon.nz avatar

YES! Got the comet. It was bloody hard. I was battling twilight and the low altitude of the comet. But here's a picture taken at 19:06 when 12P/Pons-Brooks was just 2 degrees above the horizon!

So it’s the 112th anniversary of Titanic sinking. As lights are turned off in Museums across Aotearoa let’s remember history is important. Let’s not sink our Museums..:
