Cue all the Musk fan-bois chiming in. We need a serious planetary debate about LEO constellations. It isn't happening.

This is a final reminder that I'm giving a talk at 6 p.m. tonight about some recent astronomy antics. It is at The Royal Society Te apārangi HQ in Thorndon, and admission is free. There may be lots of pictures of the aurora.

Lol. When at Dunedin Airport I always visit the only one of my pictures on public display. It is in the male throne room in departures :-)

Over the course of an hour on Saturday evening, I took a series of images of Comet Pons-Brooks. Every single image had several satellite trails from Musk's cosmic vermin. Here's the movie Thanks Starlink!

A movie showing trails from cosmic vermin (aka starlink) satellites trails crossing a beautiful comet

Wellingtonians, I'm talking tomorrow night about my latest astronomy adventures. 6 pm at The Royal Society Te Apārangi in Thorndon. Admission is free!

@bsd1 I don't know... I believe it is being carried live on zoom so maybe?

Here is another picture of Comet Pons Brooks from last night. This was taken by merging/median combining 35 images taken using a 93mm refractor to remove the shitty Starlink satellites. The ion and dust tails from the comet are clearly visible as is its green coma!

Yet another version of Comet Pons Brooks, taken on 4/5/24 from Dunedin New Zealand

So.. i managed to median exclude the satellites and here's a picture of comet Pons Brooks taken tonight from New Zealand!

Bloody Elon Musk is destroying the night sky. This is a single one minute exposure of Comet Pons Brooks tonight.

@enoch_exe_inc Lol. Your wit is as funny as Elon's ego.

@bonsai they don’t have to be the future.

iangriffin,

@bonsai this is classic tragedy of the commons stuff. Why can’t everyone have a say in how our planets environment is despoiled rather than some techno types. just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.

Tee hee. That moment you get your boss to carry a bright yellow Geiger counter onto a flight for a project to track radiation on aircraft and you realise you forgot to tell him both that you had set the radiation alarm too low and had left the sound alert on. Also the sound alert was set to "Danger Will Robinson".

Bloody hell. Here's about 13 minutes of integration on Comet Pons-Brooks tonight. Altitude less than 10 degrees!

WOW! Comet C/12P Pons-Brooks was epic this evening. Visible to the naked eye from Strath Taieri. This is a single shot as the comet was setting behind some clouds! Its altitude was under 2 degrees!

Another SOFIA flight-deck shot, this one from 2019. Can you spot the aurora australis?

So back in 2022 I was on board during SOFIA's last southern hemisphere science flight. I took some pictures.... here's the flight deck atop the climb out of Christchurch with the sky coloured by aerosols from the Tongan volcano
