Packing for WWDC. This will be my first long haul flight (11hrs!) since getting my Vision Pro. Which means I needed to download some long, epic movies to try watching with Travel Mode.

Really there was only one choice…

@_Davidsmith Good luck! I got a bit 😵‍💫 after watching Dune (2.5h) in the Vision Pro the other day.

Travel Mode worked great for me on the plane though. It's a game-changer for entertainment on long-haul flights!

Apropos of nothing.

Do I know anyone with a frame.work (@frameworkcomputer) laptop?

Read horrible things about their bendy screen bezels.

ikenndac,
@ikenndac@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa Good luck! I'm super excited that I'll be able to upgrade my unit to the new better display later this year.

@schwa I have a Framework 13 w/AMD and I really like it. Fit and finish on mine is great considering the modularity and the fact that I put it together (DIY edition).

Not quite up to MacBook Pro levels, but getting up there and way better than most Windows laptops I’ve seen (granted, those were probably cheapo ones).

ikenndac,
@ikenndac@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa Not bad in my opinion, but I’m not super sensitive to it (I know some folks can’t bear a whisper). Putting it into Windows’ low power mode shuts the fan up more or less completely.

I put in some PTM7950 (https://www.lttstore.com/products/ptm7950-phase-change-thermal-pad) which improved thermal performance a bit, too.

I've had a couple of weeks flooded with positivity and good vibes thanks for a lovely trip to New York then Chicago for @DeepDishSwift.

Time to balance that out by making my code style guidelines public so people on the internet can tell me how much of an awful person I am: https://github.com/Cascable/guidelines/wiki/Code-Style-Guidelines

@ivory Do you have a method of linking purchases across Apple IDs? I'm in the EU and subscribed but am forced to use a US Apple ID in my Vision Pro. It'd be really nice to use Ivory without paying twice.

Hopefully the US-only restriction will be lifted soon 🤞

Some dipshit recruiter added Cascable's customer support email address to their spam target list, so our support system is getting filled up with bullshit.

Usually I block, report as spam and move on. Today I'm feeling a bit feisty.

If you're a space enthusiast/nerd, I HIGHLY recommend The Race For Space by Public Service Broadcasting (AM: https://music.apple.com/se/album/the-race-for-space/947928979?l=en-GB).

It's a musical retelling of the '60s space race using real voice recordings.

It REALLY rewards a whole listen-through - going through the initial steps, then "Fire In The Cockpit" through to "Go!” is a real journey.

If you want to listen to one track RIGHT NOW, my favourite is "Go!" - it really captures the tension and joy of that first manned landing.

IT IS DONE.

I have finally “finished" and written up the "it'll just be a couple of weeks!” project that I started in December, exploring the idea of writing a Windows app in C# that calls into a cross-platform Swift codebase.

It's been quite the journey 😅, and if you find this sort of thing interesting I'd appreciate it if you'd check it out and give it a boost.

Swift on Windows day 1:

A bit of a bumpy start, but once I had an environment going things worked remarkably well. @davedelong's great Time library compiled and passed nearly all of its tests without modification, for instance.

This afternoon I got a Visual Studio C++ project calling into Swift code, which was a pretty awesome baby step towards my eventual goal of shipping a cross-platform Swift SDK to the Windows platform.

I've been eyeing up this horrendously overkill USB powerbank for months, and the Black Friday discounts finally got me to pull the trigger. I love it:

  1. I love transparent electronics
  2. I love needless statistics and the tiny screen is crammed with numbers
  3. The variable-voltage DC out jack is super useful for hobby stuff
  4. They made a mistake with their discount and I got it for 66% off!

Gardening pro tip: Clear the fallen leaves BEFORE it snows. Raking a tree’s worth of frozen leaves is a pain in the ass.

As a hobby, 3D printing brings me so much joy.

We got a writing desk with a window into one of the drawers, and I made some ink bottle holders so I can display my inks nicely alongside my pens.

Each one of these holders took 8 hours to print, so maybe a new printer is in my future. Still, it's so cool!

(Forgive the dark images, I won't see the sun outside work hours until March now)

A glass window in a black desk. Through the window is a display case of fountain pens next to two rows of ink bottles in the 3D printed holders.

I was digging through some photos for work and found this one I took with a probe lens. I really need to dig it out again and experiment with it more - it gives so many creative options for product photography!

I know I should rise above it, but one-star reviews like this really get my goat.

If you use Photo Scout and enjoy it, I'd really appreciate it if you'd leave a rating or review - particularly if you're in the US. Right now it's just folks angry at subscriptions.

Somehow my email address got attached to my LinkedIn profile via those "Find a profile's email address" scraper tools, despite that fact it isn't publicly listed.

I'm now getting multiple recruiter and other B2B spam emails per day, clearly automated. Email #5 from the same person: "You haven't replied so I'm starting to think you're not interested, but just in case…”

I've been told I shouldn't just reply “Fuck off and stop bothering me" to them, but it's very tempting ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Waiting for the train with the dog and a guy comes up to me: “Is it ok to sit here with my parrot? Will your dog be ok?” and he puts down an empty cage. “You have a parrot??”

The parrot is on his shoulder in the station! and then he gets ON THE TRAIN!!! with it and it just chills there for the ENTIRE JOURNEY.

What a legend.

Time to ask for some help from the community!

The launch of Photo Scout is getting close, and it's time to start giving it to the media.

If you know of anyone in the media who might be interested in covering an indie-built iOS app for anyone who loves to be creative with a camera, please do point me their way. TestFlight is ready to go.

I've updated the pre-release website with more info and a comprehensive press kit: https://photo-scout.app

Boosts really appreciated! ❤️

The combination of iOS widgets and the invisible-to-code “provisional always" location authorisation level has led to this wonderful screen in my app.

It's far too much text, nobody is going to read it (it's only shown if the user taps a widget that's having trouble getting location).

Just look at the complexity of this flow in the Apple docs - it's mind-boggling! https://developer.apple.com/documentation/corelocation/cllocationmanager/1620551-requestalwaysauthorization

I never quite figured out if the Kylie Minogue song "Dancing" is about going out clubbing, or about the inevitability of death.

"When I go out, I wanna go out dancing."

Is it:

(I wanna) (go out dancing)

Or:

(I wanna go out) (dancing)
