I've had a couple of weeks flooded with positivity and good vibes thanks for a lovely trip to New York then Chicago for @DeepDishSwift.

Time to balance that out by making my code style guidelines public so people on the internet can tell me how much of an awful person I am: https://github.com/Cascable/guidelines/wiki/Code-Style-Guidelines

@ivory Do you have a method of linking purchases across Apple IDs? I'm in the EU and subscribed but am forced to use a US Apple ID in my Vision Pro. It'd be really nice to use Ivory without paying twice.

Hopefully the US-only restriction will be lifted soon ๐Ÿคž

@ivory I set up Family Sharing and it works for Carrot Weather but not for Ivory for whatever reason. I have the "iOS, iPadOS + macOS Yearly Sub" that I originally purchased in the Mac version, I think.

@ivory Do you have the ability for a user to extract the App Store receipt from the app? I'm interested to see what's in there - maybe the other app is syncing my receipt via iCloud.

Now that was a tight flight connection. Letโ€™s hope our luggage also made it. ๐Ÿคž

Update: Two of our three suitcases made it. The one with all the expensive stuff in it (i.e., Vision Pro box, etc) didnโ€™t.

Iโ€™m very glad I brought the Vision in my hand luggage!

Meeting many of my Internet friends in person โ€“ especially the fellas โ€“ and making many new ones at Deep Dish Swift was one of the best experiences of my life. Iโ€™m tearing up a little typing this. Iโ€™ve avoided in-person developer communities ever since college; too self-serious for my taste. That mindset carried through to this community even though I know itโ€™s a self-selecting group of people that I have vibed with for a long time.

Some dipshit recruiter added Cascable's customer support email address to their spam target list, so our support system is getting filled up with bullshit.

Usually I block, report as spam and move on. Today I'm feeling a bit feisty.

I find it very frustrating that App Store Connect leans on Dun and Bradstreet for a bunch of their business verification requirements. Anytime I interact with that company in ANY way I will then receive a steady stream of solicitations and spam for weeks to come, both in emails and phone calls.

My most recent interaction with them to update things for the new DSA requirements has started this barrage back up again.

๐Ÿ˜ž

ikenndac,
@ikenndac@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith Out here in Europeland the D&B thing is even more ridiculous since theyโ€™re very US-centric.

Luckily Iโ€™ve managed to whine enough about it in the past that Apple have let me send documents to them directly for them to update things.

I haven't been able to get TestFlight on macOS to load for two days, is it just me? Another developer told me they're seeing the same thing but I can't imagine an outage this prolonged would go unnoticed.

ikenndac,
@ikenndac@mastodon.social avatar

@mergesort Mine works, but it took a good 10-15 seconds to load.

It still blows my mind that 99% of monitors out there still have lower resolution than Apple and LG's 21" monitor from 2016. Refresh rate is cool, but cmon, Obama was still president back then

ikenndac,
@ikenndac@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod @christianselig Not helping us Mac users is that Windows' scaling is much better than macOS at non-integer scales (i.e., @ 2x) for modern Windows apps.

A 27" 4K monitor is a much better experience on Windows than Mac, since you can run Windows at 1.5x and it doesn't look like a gross blurry mess (and Windows still has subpixel antialiasing for text rendering). I bet that contributes to the lack of monitors with the super-high pixel density needed for macOS.

Daniel Kennett - Proof of Concept Project: Combining Swift and C# on Windows with SwiftToCLR https://ikennd.ac/blog/2024/02/swift-on-windows-with-swifttoclr/

Holy cow ๐Ÿ„ this looks more intimidating than I would've expected it to!

Swift/C++ interop for cross-platform apps probably really shines once you begin to write your core in C++ instead.

If you're a space enthusiast/nerd, I HIGHLY recommend The Race For Space by Public Service Broadcasting (AM: https://music.apple.com/se/album/the-race-for-space/947928979?l=en-GB).

It's a musical retelling of the '60s space race using real voice recordings.

It REALLY rewards a whole listen-through - going through the initial steps, then "Fire In The Cockpit" through to "Go!โ€ is a real journey.

If you want to listen to one track RIGHT NOW, my favourite is "Go!" - it really captures the tension and joy of that first manned landing.

If a camera capable of recording into the Appleโ€™s Immersive Video format is ever released I'd be sourly tempted to get one just to capture long, peaceful recordings of my favorite landscapes.

It would be amazing to be able to virtually return to my most cherished scenic overlooks and spend some time surrounded by their beauty.

Double bonus points if I one day was able to create a 180ยบ environment using one of these recordings on a loop.

[Though Iโ€™d stay way back from the cliff edge ๐Ÿ˜ฑ]

@christianselig @_Davidsmith Canon has a dual fisheye designed for shooting stereoscopic video with a 180ยฐ field-of-view, specifically with VR in mind. Not quite the camera-on-a-crane, but a damn sight cheaper!

IT IS DONE.

I have finally โ€œfinished" and written up the "it'll just be a couple of weeks!โ€ project that I started in December, exploring the idea of writing a Windows app in C# that calls into a cross-platform Swift codebase.

It's been quite the journey ๐Ÿ˜…, and if you find this sort of thing interesting I'd appreciate it if you'd check it out and give it a boost.

    One skill I've developed by building a Swift on the server app is taking open source Swift projects that never planned to run outside of the Apple ecosystem and making them run on Linux.

    ikenndac,
    @ikenndac@mastodon.social avatar

    @mergesort I have a couple of those too. Expanding the ecosystem!

    @dave We very specifically don't do any sort of online activation, largely because our SDK is often used in environments with no Internet access when in use by the end user, so we can't revoke licenses out in the wild.
