Whether 'tis nobler to grow wealth and gain

The finer things in life, or to undertake

A change of sex against a sea of doubters

And by opposing, gain pride. To be a man,

And face the trials of a fluctuating market,

Or become a woman, and embrace

The beauty and the freedom of another self.

I’m not sure about all your requirements. I use 1CRM. It’s based on sugar crm, which is open source. It’s self-host-able. I had a good experience with support while I was setting it up (I pay for hosting). They are located on the west coast of Canada, if time zone matters.

This is why I’m losing weight. It’s not as motivating as I hoped it would be.

Thank you for summarizing this. I don’t know why, but I’d rather reads comments than the original article.

I’m glad the prophet helped your parents.

My parents were on a senior mission. They asked their leaders if they should get the vaccine or not, since they were close to coming home. Their leaders recommended against it, since they would only be able to get one dose of three. I asked them to get one dose, then complete the series at home. Fortunately, they listened to me, because otherwise I think it would have been worse when they got COVID.

What DOES the Alberta NDP need right now?

investorsexchange,
@investorsexchange@lemmy.ca avatar

That doesn’t help then when there’s no election for over three years.

I helped campaign for the Alberta NDP. Two things I noticed. First, it wasn’t a good experience. Second, that was their best chance. If they can’t win against Danielle Smith and her posse of insane clowns, what do they need before they can appeal to a wide variety of Albertans?

If I have any realistic alternative that’s not the UCP or NDP in the next election, that’s where my vote will go.

Seems a bit off topic of my comment, but I’ll bite.

I don’t believe in free will. I don’t make choices or decisions, as such. My biology responds to environmental stimulus and cues.

Having said that, objectively I’m not very effective at being a human. I’m in a straight marriage, but bisexual (leaning gay) and only figured that out after a decade. I shout at my kids when I lose my temper. Or I sit in the dark and mope instead of dealing with my problems. Or use recreational cannabis. Although I’m physically healthy, I’m not very social and don’t have or provide a social safety net. But I have a good job that I enjoy.

Am is good person? I don’t think that means anything. But I know there are a handful of people who like being with me and benefit from my actions. So I’m a net benefit to my circle. I think that’s good enough for me.

Yes, I believe that you’re right on that point. As crazy as it seems.

I just finished reading it. I’m not sure I understood all of it, but I enjoyed it.

Excerpt From The Science of Storytelling by Will Storr.

Beneath the level of consciousness we’re a riotous democracy of mini-selves which, writes the neuroscientist Professor David Eagleman, are ‘locked in chronic battle’ for dominion. Our behaviour is ‘simply the end result of the battles’. All the while our confabulating narrator ‘works around the clock to stitch together a pattern of logic to our daily lives: what just happened and what was my role in it?’ Fabrication of stories, he adds, ‘is one of the key businesses in which our brain engages. Brains do this with the single minded goal of getting the multifaceted actions of the democracy to make sense.’ …

Our multiplicity is revealed whenever we become emotional. When we’re angry, we’re like a “different person with different values and goals in a different reality than when we feel nostalgic, depressed or excited. As adults, we’re used to such weird shifts in selfhood and learn to experience them as natural and fluid and organised. But for children, the experience of transforming from one person to another, without any sense of personal volition, can be deeply disturbing. It’s as if a wicked witch has cast an evil spell, magicking us from princess to witch.

You could start by fostering, to see how it goes.

It raises the Ship of Theseus issue. Did he really survive if he was a different person after?

investorsexchange,
@investorsexchange@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m mid-40s and not at all the same person I was in my 30s, which was very different from my 20s, which was very different from my teens, etc. What makes you certain that you’re the same person? What is there about you that, if it changed, would make you not the same person? I’m honestly curious about your perspective.

investorsexchange,
@investorsexchange@lemmy.ca avatar

I know what you mean. And I promise I’m not trying to argue, just exploring the boundary.

What if your body was injured and it became comatose. Then your brain was uploaded to a computer where you regained consciousness.

Are you the same person? Which one is you? If the computer were turned off, is the body you? If the body dies, is the mind you? What if your mind were loaded into a different body? What if your body has a different mind loaded onto it?

What I’m really trying to get at is: are you the composite of your body + your consciousness? How much would either one have to change to not be you?

She has explained elsewhere that in Calgary, businesses have historically paid a greater proportion of the tax than homeowners compared to almost all other Canadian cities. Council is looking to rebalance the share between businesses and homeowners gradually over the coming years.

I use the GL.inet Shadow and have been happy with it. If you want 5Ghz and don’t mind that it’s a little larger (still small), I’d consider the Slate. It supports the latest version of OpenWRT. openwrt.org/toh/gl.inet/gl-ar750s

They include a custom GUI on top of OpenWRT, which I like. But LuCI is still there.

Eww.

I got into ERA. French chant-type music with electric guitars. I still enjoy it occasionally.

I won’t go back to Elders quorum after today

I haven’t been for a couple weeks. In that time, an older couple moved in. They have some peculiar ideas. The EQP and another older member already have a penchant for sharing deep doctrine. Today, the EQP and new guy chased each other down a couple rabbit holes (Jewish tradition and whether or not the elements have a spirit...

Rocks, water, etc, all have a spirit and intelligence because they obey God. That’s how Jesus was able to command the elements, calm the waves, walk on water. Man is the only creation that doesn’t obey God. This is what they said, but it sounded like it was from the Pearl of Great Price or the teachings of Joseph Smith.
