jax, (edited ) to lemmy_support in Is docker documentation up to date?
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

I've opened some pull requests on the main app repo and the docs repo with changes that should fix the docker install issues people have been having.

Specifically: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/2908 / https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-docs/pull/186

jax, to fediverse in Which Fediverse software would you recommend for long-form blog posts or photo hosting?
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

That would have been good to know before setting this up lol. Oh well.

Ah, so it seems like once you've setup an instance at a domain, you've kinda burned that domain unless you use like a subdomain. That's a bit annoying, but I guess it makes sense.

Yeah, I use GH/CF pages already for most things (except the images blog(?), that's on Medium of all places).

I guess it makes sense to keep the blog it's own thing and just link to it when I write something.

@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

WTF is that? Why wouldn’t you store your signing key on something like a Yubikey that’s specifically designed for something like this? Admittedly you’d have to use a specific key type, but still.

Ah yeah I’ll have to fill out my profile and do an introduction post!

jax, to asklemmy in what social sites can you recommend?
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah, right. I’d set up some relays already, but I didn’t realize that it also shared your public posts with other instances subscribed to the relay.

@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Oh awesome, that’s a cool service that relays provide.

@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Oh! I did set up a few relays, I didn’t realize they worked both ways! So posts I make on my instance go out to the relay and people subscribed to the relay will see my posts.

@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Yeah, I’ll have to do that.

Thanks for the info, that helps clarify things.

@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah okay, so the 2 people and one bot that follow me would be seeing my posts. That seems pretty underwhelming, but makes sense lol

Yeah, I’m going to see if some of my IRL friends are interested, but I’m not sure how many of them use Twitter/Reddit/etc currently.

jax, to asklemmy in what social sites can you recommend?
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Ah, so similar to the issues with finding content on a single user Mastodon instance :(

I think the biggest leap forward for the Fediverse would be making content more discoverable. Just not sure how that would be done.

The other problem for a single user instance would be that anything you post is basically shouting into the void unless people follow you. At least with Lemmy you can post to other instances/communities.

jax, to asklemmy in what social sites can you recommend?
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

Does it make sense to host your own Pixelfed instance (like I’m doing with Mastodon and Lemmy currently)? I occasionally do some photography and having a place to post my images to replace my current site would be nice.

jax, to lemmy in Which subreddits would you most like to see on Lemmy?
@jax@lemmy.cloudhub.social avatar

My understanding is that a lot of VPS hosts have rules against hosting NSFW content, and they have to be strictly moderated (hopefully for obvious reasons…).

We’ll see I guess, I hope it doesn’t turn out like the TouchBar on older MBP models or the Apple Watch (mostly just for notifications and fitness)
