Viidakon vanha sananlasku sanoo:

VÄESTÖNVAIHTO ON ÄÄRIOIKEISTOLAINEN PROPAGANDAPARSI, VAIKKA SEN KIELITIETEILIJÄ VOISSA PAISTAA.

@paavokassi melko sakeaa pirujen maalailua kyllä. Kello tikittää, ilmoittautuuko jossain vaiheessa vielä Keskisarjan perään persuksi, vaikka tuossa sanookin että heillä ”juna meni”

Invoices have these long unbroken strings of numbers that identify the account, the customer, a reference number, etc. These are really hard to get right in manual input, especially when the same number is repeated multiple times.

The obvious solution is to split them into smaller groups, but “000 000” is not technically the same as “000000” and requires an extra step of normalizing data before processing.

Did any designers attempt to address this challenge?

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@monokrom @koeberlin @typefacts I've noticed that at least some bank input forms have opted to processing away the spaces, to deal with copied text. Probably something they should/need to do in any case, considering text copied from PDF:s, Word, etc.

Vuorokausi Euroviisuista takana. Pettymys toisesta sijasta on kääntynyt voitoksi.

Any good articles or posts about the ethics of AI chat sensorship? Currently ChatGPT and others seem very moralistic. I can see benefits of that in many case. But there is no filtering that would be free of cultural norms.

jhilden,
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@jaukia @osma plus also the somewhat but not entirely separate question of the language models going off the rails on random tangents, not necessarily offensive, but just not suitable for the context: you don’t want, say, a restaurant reservation bot that can be easily coaxed into talking about Schopenhauer, but it seems that these kinds of guardrails are hard to do…

Testing robot grocery delivery. More fun than practical, since we have a small supermarket closer to home than the nearest dropoff spot. The robots give a very careful, nearly frightened expression. You almost feel a little sorry for them. Interface works fine.

The robots give a very careful, nearly frightened impression and are easily disturbed if someone walks close. You almost feel a little sorry for them. Interface works fine. 3,9€ for delivery, took less than 30 min.

Sharing your dreams is rightfully frowned upon but:

Last night I visited an art installation underneath an unassuming hotel in Greenland.
A few stairs down there was a balcony overlooking a dusty post-apocalyptic landscape housed in a vast underground space, hundreds of meters wide, several stories tall and so long that the far wall vanished in the distance.
After donning ”space suits” made of discarded bike helmets and sportsgear you were allowed to explore it in small groups.

I sort of thought the cruise business was dying after the pandemic but…

Helsingin Sanomat writes about the absolutely huge cruise ship Icon of the Seas being built in Turku, which features a water park called Thrill Island and a gigantic pool called Chill Island & some sort of 14 m high spherical arena called the Pearl. Utter Neill Blomkamp stuff.

Has anyone made a good documentary about these Caribbean monstrosities?

Tend to agree with the author that literary fiction probably will be ”okay”, as much as it is surviving as a human endeavour these days. Bit like independent/experimental music.

Remembering prompted by this nicely written review of a new ai fiction work https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/01/books/aidan-marchine-death-of-an-author.html
