Interesting how well Helsinki is doing here, outperforming sustainable mobility publicity darling Paris, among others

Vietnamese name Lê Đức Thọ causing type rendering issues in Helsingin Sanomat due to missing characters.
For the record, very few Latin type families include the full set of Vietnamese accented letters.

Wholesome: decorating gingerbreads and listening to drum&bass classics. Kids are both at least for the moment out of the annoying ”what is this BAD music, it’s not children’s music!!” phase.

(re-up of meme from 2 years ago, when I looked up the exact font used in the original – it is Apple Garamond Light)

This vexing crop issue with QGIS vector exports? With world maps, if a shape is cut in half at the outermost meridians, the pieces get connected across the world instead of along each edge, creating annoying stripes. In simple cases it is relatively painless to fix manually. (The rendered preview shows the map correctly.)

The solution is to uncheck ”simplify geometries" in the export pane.

From a Scandinavian perspective it is somewhat wild to see how covid boosters are a big political issue in the US.
E.g. Denmark, widely lauded for their effective covid response, does not recommend boosters for people under 65 outside risk groups. The Danish public health authority is hardly part of the “Republican death cult”.

Mäntsälä, a municipality some 60 km north of Helsinki is a good illustration of how the Finnish countryside was changed by car-centric development. Compare these two aerial photographs, with current road centerlines superimposed in red.

Many things might be done differently now, if it was possible to return to 1948 and start anew.

5-yo was blowing soap bubbles into the slipstream on the bike back seat and giggling the whole way home. Moments that make me severely confused as to how there are people that are against cycling.

I’m increasingly convinced that the one single thing that got many people who spurned Mastodon to pick up Bluesky simply is the friction of picking an instance.

Simply not having a choice there is massively easier for most people than having to pick a tribe when starting out. I got lucky here with vis.social, but people are liable to give up if they can’t find something that a) seems okay and b) is open for new accounts.

I generally like @MonaApp, but the alt text input is in obvious need of a redesign (on iOS). It hides the image, the window is unnecessarily small. Also text recognition from images would be super helpful, this was something Metatext did well.

Maybe there is a valid explanation for why this Bauhaus ad features a toddler stuck in a toilet but I sure can’t think of it.
”Bauhausin tuotteet sopivat kuin taapero pönttöön”?

Useful tip for masking one layer with another here. Note that it doesn’t work with editable svg vector exports, however

Ha, in Norwegian a complicated interchange (or grade-separated junction in British) is a trafikkmaskin. Literally Traffic Machine.
Alternatives spaghettikryss or veispaghetti; spaghetti crossing or road spaghetti!

A blog post in Finnish about how the street space in Helsinki is divided between different modes of traffic. Unsurprisingly, as much as 75% is mainly reserved for cars.

It is funny how Gary Larson went from a niche cartoon that you would find on mostly biology people’s noticeboards to widely popular meme fodder. He was in the 2020s back in the 1990s? Or the nerds took over? Or… both?

Maybe specifically a false memory, but I think I asked dad to explain Cow Tools. Some other Larson cartoons for sure.

@aleksi Something slightly Jan Lööf-ish as well! The somewhat doll-like nature of all the characters.

@aleksi This stuff is afaik not very known outside of Scandinavia. Fantagraphics should do a ”best of Jan Lööf” book for the Anglosphere.

Not sure if this is universal, but a non-trivial number of Swedes in Sweden pronounce ”kaos” (chaos) so that it sounds identical to ”cows” in English, and this pronounciation may carry over when they are speaking English. (In Finland we say kā-os, but with slightly shorter ”a” than in Finnish).

Very odd InDesign/PDF bug:

Font rendering incorrectly in an interactive PDF, but only in Chrome.

Previous PDFs exported from the same file render correctly. Only obvious difference is that the faulty file is PDF version 1.7. and the other 1.5.

You can’t choose the PDF version in Interactive PDF export. However, this was fixed simply by re-saving the PDF in Acrobat (no need to change version). So something tiny is broken in InDesign’s 1.7 pipeline and not in Acrobat’s.

@frankrolf as of yet unpublished client work, but let’s see if I can create a clean demo…

jhilden, (edited )
@jhilden@vis.social avatar

@frankrolf this becomes stranger – tried to make a new file, no issue. Tried to make a new file from the affected file (deleted all but one page), also no issue! Nor when making single-page exports of the affected InDesign document.

New factoid. F1 cars are ridiculously un-aerodynamic (some sleek modern production EV:s get a Cd of 0.22):

"Interestingly, modern F1cars are reported to have Cd values of about 0.85 with corresponding CdA[m2] values near 1.2.1. These values are approximately triple of those for the modern road car, and only a bit higher then typical bus."
