There are sentences you find yourself sending you never thought would have been apart of your life before, such as:

I mean, I'm talking like an expert because it's 1 nil to me in the poolympics

@jonoabroad As a regular at a gastro clinic over the last decade, I can tell you that would barely raise an eyebrow in some circles ;-)

Almost overnight demand for Microsoft's Surface range of devices has dried up. What is going on?

https://billbennett.co.nz/microsoft-surface/

jond,
@jond@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett In the last 6 years, I have used a Surface and, more recently, a Surface laptop daily. Whether for admin, accounts and writing, delivering presentations or running hundreds of in-person or online workshops, they have been, for the most part, remarkably robust and reliable machines. 1/3

jond,
@jond@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett Aside from a few niggles with the physical connectivity of the first Surface's detachable keyboard, the hardware has handled hard use, lots of travel and the inevitable heart-stopping drops with no significant issues. 2/3

jond,
@jond@mastodon.nz avatar

@billbennett The only issue I have experienced has been with a Surface Dock - occasionally unreliable in connectivity, then degrading/failure at the connector end of the cable. After 30+ years using computers at work, the Surface laptop is among the best machines I have used. 3/3

@billbennett "On the whole they feel better than other Windows devices. However, raw performance is now a long way behind Apple"

My current Mac experience is limited to occasionally using my old MBP with no sound running Capitan or Sierra; however, the statement above (and your other comments) ring true for me. Perhaps I need to take a look at moving back to a Mac when the next replacement comes due.

    I don’t intend to dispute the ticket I got for driving in the Queen Street bus lane, but I would argue that navigating all the radically changed (since my last drive there) road conditions, cones and diversions around that part of town meant I didn’t get to see any warning signs until I was actually in the bus lane.

    jond,
    @jond@mastodon.nz avatar

    @billbennett Might be worth a try. I had what I believe is a comparable ticket driving north on Symonds and intending to turn right into Grafton a years back. Got the ticket, explained the issue with words, Google Maps and a few photos of signage locations. Received a reply saying that, while I had contravened the rules and they definitely weren't giving an inch, they wouldn't pursue the matter further.

    @robert_p_king Oooff, this reminds me of trying to establish and run overlapping rosters for five regional teams to provide 24/7/365 follow-the-sun cover in my old telco role. I wonder what happened to HTMLCal (which I think is what I used)...

    Do folks have multiple large ? If so how are they configured?

    I have a 49", but could use more display space if I could figure where to put it.

    @jonoabroad @sidawson Re: desk mounts for sit/stand desks. I have a different use case (multi-screen Zoom studio for workshop facilitation) and I use Loktech desk mounts for my screens (landscape./ side-by-side), plus camera plus 1 of 3 lights. No-drill friction mounts have given 18 months daily use with no issues.

    My younger son made it onto RNZ Nights last night talking about his Dunedin cycle courier business. https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/nights/audio/2018895532/pedal-power-business-proves-popular

    @leighelse Thanks for sharing - listening as I type. I was among the first cycle couriers in London in the 1980s and I loved the freedom, fun and friendship I found in the work and the courier community back then. Just yesterday, I was chatting with a friend about the long overnight ride some of us used to do from a pub in London's East End to the Channel coast.

    jond,

    @jonoabroad @Antigrav For me, any combo of too much travel, work and unhealthy food mixed with too little sleep, change of season or missing loved ones will bring that on.

    PSA: phone scam from NZ phone number.

    Forgot to post this last night. Yesterday, I had a call from 0632504886. A recorded voice message announced it as a call from One NZ (formerly Vodafone) to notify me that my service was to be terminated and instructing me to press one or more digits. Suspecting it was a scam, I dumped the call. After checking to One NZ customer service, they confirmed these call are NOT from One NZ.
