I really like Michael Spicer and his latest video about social media has really got me thinking.

I’ve found in the past when I’ve been off for a while, I come back wondering what I missed.

Xbox laying off 2,000 workers because "the industry didn't grow enough" is obtuse at best.

And it ignores a simple economic reality even a toddler should be able to understand:

Infinite growth is a goddamn myth.

It’s the great collective delusion of capitalism.

An industry cannot grow year on year indefinitely.

At some point you run the fuck out of consumers.

If your business model is based on hand waving hypothetical growth, you’re either lying to us or you’re lying to yourself.

@Daojoan @dialogcrm Infinite growth is the fundamental basis of pyramid schemes.

It’s 2024 and we still have websites collapsing under load when expected demand hits it.

Trying desperately to win tickets to Pearl Jam for my wife. The Sound plays a song and tells you can send them a text. You just get a URL back. Click the URL and Register to win. Need to login. Login doesn’t work.

Mozilla fires 60 people to “focus on bringing ‘trustworthy AI into Firefox.’”

Fuck you, Mozilla. No one is asking for AI in Firefox. Sadly, you’re the best we can hope for under capitalism. So if we want something better, we should look into alternative models.

A fresh batch of Tesla superchargers are being installed in The Hub mall in Hornby, Christchurch. Thanks to Riki for the photo.
Tesla cars are still in my top 3 recommended vehicles for new EV buyers simply because Tesla drivers have SO MANY charging options.

@KiwiEV I’ll only buy a Tesla when they bring back the stalks.

And maybe if Elon is fired into the sun.

Would buying an EV make sense? I did some numbers.

We've just completed 75000km in our 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander at 7.5l/100km costing $2.75/litre for a total energy cost of $15,500 or just over $3.1k per year.

An MG4 doing the same distance at 16kWh per 100km and 0.30kWh (home charging) would have an energy cost of $3600, plus an additional $5700 for RUCs at $76/1000km. Total cost of $9300 or $1900 per year.

robert_p_king,
@robert_p_king@mastodon.nz avatar

@alex @thomasbeagle The only issue I have is it doesn’t take into account loan repayments on the vehicle though.

When I compare my current car (Kia Seltos) to a Kia EV6, the monthly loan payment would surpass the running cost saving by a few thousand.

tpetrina, to dotnet

Hey devs - how many environments do you have besides production? Do you have a dedicated staging or qa environment?

robert_p_king,
@robert_p_king@mastodon.nz avatar

@tpetrina Generally a local dev, shared dev (for infrastructure setup), shared test (for QA) and then prod.

robert_p_king,
@robert_p_king@mastodon.nz avatar

@tpetrina Dev is deployed automatically on a PR merging to main. That is then promoted manually to test and beyond.

Gonna have to fill up at home for $8 instead. 😠

OK RUCs for EVs and PHEVs from April 1st. Fine no problem there.

$76 per 1000km

But how will they know what odometer reading I have?

Also this will wreck PHEVs I think for many
