I wanted to be able to scroll a man page with my mouse wheel. While looking for a setting to change I learned that can be used as a pager allowing mouse support and much more.

More detail is available on my unfinished blog: https://github.com/VAggrippino/blog/blob/main/_input/posts/use-vim-as-a-pager.md

Here's how I changed my PAGER variable:

export PAGER="/bin/sh -c \"unset PAGER;col -b -x | vim -R \
 -c 'set ft=man mouse=a nonumber' \
 -c 'highlight Normal ctermbg=NONE guibg=NONE' \
 -c 'map q :q<CR>' \
 -c 'map <SPACE> <C-D>' \
 -c 'map b <C-U>' \
 -c 'nmap K :Man <C-R>=expand(\\\"<cword>\\\")<CR><CR>' -\""

@VinceAggrippino That’s delightfully cursed. I’ll see what the least horrible way to get that into old vi may be.

@VinceAggrippino Oh also, have you seen https://github.com/rkitover/vimpager & https://github.com/lucc/nvimpager? I found ‘em while exploring /usr/ports/sysutils

Watched a stream on modal editing options in by @daviwil and my thoughts are that meow is interesting HCI project and quite good in terms of UX: It visually shows the object you will operate on first and let you make some modification second.

I had around a decade of experience, I could do some operations very efficiently, but it never tasted right. I think verb+object approach is just suboptimal, also it can't be accompanied by a nice UI feedback.

@abcdw @daviwil You’ll really enjoy https://helix-editor.com.
Funny thing is that I thought I was fully convinced in the value on subject + verb command systems by https://qsapp.com, but had never realized the power of the model applied to text.

Poll: Do you use "Tiling window manager" on your or /*BSD desktop?

@nixCraft I use amethyst on macOS, but CDE on FreeBSD. Because deep madness is the way.

The GOP estate tax repeal bill would give:

$1.8 trillion to billionaires
$88 billion to the Walton family
$72 billion to Elon Musk’s family
$46 billion to the Bezos family
$0 to 99.9% of families

And they want you to know how deeply concerned they are about the national debt.

josephholsten,

@rbreich I’d gladly waive the estate tax for a very, very low wealth tax (and prohibit inheritance of unreported assets). Because with one year of data collection would change the way everyone looks at wealth distribution.
