if they had collaborated, the male desire to outdo each other, of maintaining honor and the pitfall of only having something to lose and nothing to gain would have impeded progress.

maybe. but looking at e.g. WW2 UK, it's much easier for people to accept personal hardships and invest extraordinary effort when "the other" is an enemy on all levels, so you can motivate "your people" by degrading and vilifying "the other" and blaming them for the current hardships. people are willing to suffer to an extend unimaginable if you just give them an enemy to fight.
