Is there a use/benefit/purpose to having a Mastodon account, a Pixelfed account, and a Calckey account? They all seem to fit a different niche, but there’s a lot of overlap it seems. (I haven’t used Calckey yet.)

And also, what if I want to actually host/own my content all in one place without hosting several different instances? I can use my website, but then need to syndicate all that to ActivityPub and handle incoming as well?

An update on what happened last night:

We've been experiencing a lot of PostgreSQL timeouts. I thought it may be a good idea to move the database to a serverless platform, https://neon.tech , so I took down c.s and attempted a migrate. I assumed this would maybe be 30 minutes to an hour, it ended up taking over 4 hours. After it finally worked, it was even slower than our own postgres server, so I switched it back.

@7666 yeah, basically this. The reason I went with them is because they claimed they had great connection pooling, our postgres craps out at around 250 conns. They couldn't even handle that, it was a bit pathetic....

@shibao their auto scaling is, for lack of better terms, shit. It doesn't work at all. Their support team is unresponsive, and many people said in their Discord that auto scaling isn't ready yet.

Dumb idea of the moment:

Say a competent & committed person launched a premium instance. , let’s say, but it could be any flavor.

By premium I mean that it would require all accounts to pay $15/month.

Further assume that 100 people would sign up for that. (For the record; I would totally sign up for that.)

That’s $1500/month. Not a living wage, but possibly enough to make it worth their while to do all the backend shit people like me cannot do, which likely is not anywhere near a full-time job.

I know the devil is in the details, but on broad strokes… why wouldn’t this work?

a lot of “how to mak an game” influencers on youtubes have very little experience actually shipping a game but lots of experience tinkering with the cool parts. the irony is that they teach not how to make a game but how to make the same nowhere-bound project they are mired in

But yeah, there's very few gamedevs YouTubers who ship actually complete games that aren't gamejam level. Not that gamejams are bad, but it's a bit like memorizing chopsticks on the piano and saying you can play Chopin.

apparently calckey still has this old misskey bug where if someone quotes something with a cw and nothing else, it strips that cw and displays the quoted post like a renote ​:blobcattableflip:​
