How do I prevent changing feeds by swiping left or right on calckey web ui? Can I disable this feature? I seem to do it accidentally all the time

Here's what's coming up!

Yes, Calckey is undergoing a full rebranding!! But it's more than that. We've worked for MONTHS on this, and there's going to be a lot of changes and exciting things coming up. This includes:

• Press releases?!?!
• A super sick trailer video
• A full roadmap for the next couple YEARS
• A new flagship server that will be AUTOMATICALLY MIGRATED TO from calckey.social (a Fediverse first!)
• A cute new mascot ​:calc_swear:​ <(I'm not cute?!)
• A new code hosting service with better CI/CD
• The stable release you've all been waiting for, but not as v14.0.0... as v1!!

And this is all coming on

July 19th.

I'm considering taking a break from here.

Mostly because I was thinking about moving to a different instance but... where?
I mean I like it here, but I have this nagging feeling that is time to move.

(Also the one instance where I could theoretically fit in, I had a fight with the admin months ago. I muted him. Not going to speak with that person again.)

I have so many random things I'm interested in...

Maybe different accounts on different instances?

PSA: do NOT use neon[.]tech for managed/serverless PostgreSQL. Their prices are way too high, their performance is way too low, their documentation contains factual inaccuracies, and most of their advertised features aren't even there yet.

Is there a use/benefit/purpose to having a Mastodon account, a Pixelfed account, and a Calckey account? They all seem to fit a different niche, but there’s a lot of overlap it seems. (I haven’t used Calckey yet.)

And also, what if I want to actually host/own my content all in one place without hosting several different instances? I can use my website, but then need to syndicate all that to ActivityPub and handle incoming as well?

Hey there folks, let’s have another friendly chat about calckey.social!

I’ve mentioned it before, but just to clarify, I’m not the one taking care of the nitty-gritty backend stuff of calckey.social - that’s all been the Herculean task of our superstar @kainoa.

They’ve really been giving it their all to keep the wheels of calckey.social turning. It’s not always been a walk in the park, though. Over the past few months, @kainoa has been tackling a few pesky database issues with determination and grit. Just last night, they stayed up all night working on a database migration, but as sometimes happens, things didn’t go quite as planned.

In light of this, I’d love it if we could all give @kainoa a bit of breathing room for the next few days. We’ve had some ups and downs with the uptime, and although it’s not ideal, it’s important to remember that @kainoa is volunteering their time and energy to this project. After their late-night coding marathon, they could really use a break.

So, where do we go from here, you might be asking? Well, I’m in the midst of linking up @kainoa with a few database whizzes who have some clever thoughts on how to sort out the key issues we’ve been facing. Fingers crossed, if things go well in the coming week, they’ll be working alongside @kainoa to fine-tune the system and get calckey.social back on steady ground.

For the time being, it would be a big help if we could steer clear of using calckey.social for any super important stuff. I’ve temporarily hit pause on new registrations, and won’t be dishing out any invite codes for a bit. We won’t have everything patched up in a day - it might take a tad longer than a week.

Above all, let’s remember to be gentle with @kainoa. This project is a true labor of love for them, and they deserve all the support we can give. Thanks for your understanding, and cheers to brighter days ahead for calckey.social!

An update on what happened last night:

We've been experiencing a lot of PostgreSQL timeouts. I thought it may be a good idea to move the database to a serverless platform, https://neon.tech , so I took down c.s and attempted a migrate. I assumed this would maybe be 30 minutes to an hour, it ended up taking over 4 hours. After it finally worked, it was even slower than our own postgres server, so I switched it back.
