Developer friends! Am I reading the HIG correctly that the 44pt square target size recommendation is for all platforms, including macOS?

This aligns with WCAG AAA guidance as well, so Iā€™m guessing this is Mac-inclusive, and macOS just goes below this target quite a bit.

Just making sure Iā€™m not missing some ā€œexcept for on Macsā€ caveat somewhere.

kanec,
@kanec@techhub.social avatar

@matt the 44x44pt requirement only came in after iOS (and Android) decided that itā€™s a good minimum size to be able to be tapped easily without missing it.

I donā€™t think it is something that is explicitly required in macOS since the pointer is precise, doesnā€™t support magnetism, and doesnā€™t have to fall back to or simultaneously support touch interfaces.

Many of AppKitā€™s built-in controls donā€™t have a minimum of 44pts of hit area either, including the traffic lights!

But if you were taking the HIG as gospel then it does read like any device that supports a pointer should have 44x44pt hit area. But personally with my experience of macOS and Apple platforms, I read it as ā€œany device where pointer input isnā€™t the primary input deviceā€

Iā€™m playing Xbox at the moment to play the new Hellblade and honestly the whole experience is trash compared to a PlayStation. The controller sucks, why are the buttons so noisy?! And it still uses an archaic rumble pack inside!

When you get an achievement it makes a really obnoxious noise over whatever is happening on screen taking you right out of being immersed, and the UI for this is smack bang in the middle of the screen covering up subtitles. šŸ¤¦

And just the general OS experience is very unpolished compared to PS.

Maybe it's stagecraft. Maybe it's something elseā€¦

OpenAI's sub-30 minute presentation yesterday was more compelling than Google's I/O keynoteā€¦and it wasn't even close.

kanec,
@kanec@techhub.social avatar

@matt my problem with Google is probably the same as many others, Iā€™m tired of stuff being announced that goes nowhere. OpenAI work on essentially one thing, so morality aside the tech actually feels like itā€™s going to be supported and pushed forward, for better or worse

The main time I find wfh challenging is when I need to debug something with another person or team. We can obvs screen share using Tuple or whatever but the coordination just seems more tricky remotely.

This is not a reason for everyone to go back to the office permanently, youā€™ll prise remote working out of my cold dead hands but itā€™s just an example of a case where itā€™s not actually better. But for every negative there are a thousand positives to working from home.

This might be a weird recommendation request, but Iā€™m on the hunt for a single player game on Switch or PC that I can play with the sound off and still enjoy. Some light story is fine, but ideally the gameplay is the star of the show.

Any suggestions? :eyebrows:

kanec,
@kanec@techhub.social avatar

@matt does it have to be a new game? Final Fantasy VII or VIII arenā€™t spoken and just have captions on-screen so works perfectly without sound

kanec,

@matt 8 for sure! 7 gets so much hype but I enjoyed 8 so much more

@JediMax @matt my partner and I were talking about something similar as well. I donā€™t care about a car or robots, I want Apple to start making things like routers and backup capsules again. Things people actually need rather than stuff just to make investors happy

The rumored "small" Pixel 9 will likely have a 6.0" screen. I can already hear the iPhone Mini fans screaming "that's not small, you monsters!"

Yeowza the Google Home app on iOS is just an absolute catastrophe. I give HomeKit a hard time but the Google alternative is not good right now. Stuff just randomly disappears and reappears. Nothing works correctly. Itā€™s buggy AF.

I should actually look around Xcode more often, I'm sure this was in there forever but I just found it. Finds all subclasses of the selected class. (I'm choosing to ignore the Swiftism menu naming).

kanec,
@kanec@techhub.social avatar

@paul I assume it works for protocols too which can also have inheritance?

Finished re-playing TLOU2 Remastered. Even better this time round. Extremely solid storytelling. Supremely gorgeous on an OLED with HDR.

If you have an OLED now but originally played it on something else I very much recommend getting the remastered version.

And also the 30fps unlocked mode is actually bearable so donā€™t worry about lowering the resolution to get 60fps. Can only imagine how fab this game would be on a PS5 Pro šŸ¤¤

Literally all I want from multitasking on iPad/iPhone is for the fear of the app being killed for memory to be gone. Thatā€™s what sets the Mac apart. You can leave an app running indefinitely and thereā€™s no fear of it randomly being closed while youā€™re not using it.
