All of the talk over the last few weeks about startups shipping unfinished hardware reminds me, and not for the first time, what a triumph the is. The whole @panic crew worked so hard to deliver something that fulfilled expectations and then some against challenges (like a global pandemic and supply chain fiasco) that would have leveled others.

This is fantastic. If you’ve got the Rabbit apk launcher plz share with me christina at christina dot is. This is hilarious. https://www.androidauthority.com/rabbit-r1-is-an-android-app-3438805/

@b3ll of course it does! We’ve got limited budgets and need to design custom charging cables and wireless charging battery extenders. Or we need to pay Teenage Engineering to shit out a rejected Playdate prototype. We don’t have money for custom Linux runtimes! AOSP is the new Busybox is a thing I legit wrote a decade ago.

@JoeBeam @gruber oh, I’ve got one! I wanted the apk

@cabel @b3ll people who don’t half-ass hardware! So it’s basically you guys and Valve (Valve counts because yes they use Linux as fhe base for SteamOS but they delivered Proton and built the entire custom UI. And before people try to claim Valve got Proton from Wine, yes. They had a base to start with. They then invested the resources to actually make Wine good in the modern era and they do patches on the weekly to fix game quirks)

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@zjp @b3ll I’ve been enamored with it since I first played one at xoxo in 2019. I was part of the first batch of orders. I love it so much.

@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@outadoc I mean, the AI isn’t client side and I don’t expect these types of companies (read: hype driven) to take on the task of building their own OS or anything. But the fact that someone extracted or got a hold of the apk and it worked on a phone (apparently they fixed some stuff so prob not anymore) is hilarious.

Honestly, support ublock origin and you can win back the Mac browser market. But the current extension model in Safari is such a terrible experience for every person involved, developers and users. https://techhub.social/@Techmeme/112360846501810807

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@kris honestly the Safari for Mac people are the only people who rival the Apple Music for Mac people in the delusional Olympics.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@avakining absolutely. The various blockers for Safari just aren’t the same and are just worse in very meaningful ways.

So other than Taylor Swift, the only song I’ve had on replay for the last week or so is this. This is the song of the summer for 2024. Calling it now. https://youtu.be/t7bQwwqW-Hc?si=cu5H2gBM7PLQHT6F

The only time I’ve ever been what one could call a “responsible” consumer in my entire life was my refusal to buy an Apple Vision Pro. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/27/24142810/apple-vision-pro-ebay-low-prices

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@Eggfreckles I played with them once and it was fun! Not sure I need to spend a few thousand dollars to do it again!

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@paul didn’t buy that either. I did get the Rabbit R1 which I should get this week. But that was $200. My 404 AF1s cost more than that. $200 for a toy I use a handful of times and got free Perplexity AI out of, I’m fine with.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@freediverx it was a gamble. I knew as soon as I used it that it was a great tech demo — one of the best I’ve ever seen. It was also clear that for me, there was no way to justify its price at this point in time. Maybe if I were richer and $4000 was equivalent of what $400 is to me now. I hope most of the people who bought it were in a position to afford it or to write it off.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@jeffkibuule @paul I mean, for $200 that doesn’t phase me, but I think that is a correct thing to point out. That said, when I bought it I also got a year of Perplexity AI Pro for free, which I quite like, and that was $200 so this is all a wash for me. I certainly wouldn’t encourage anyone who wasn’t buying it as a toy and didn’t have the disposable income, to bother with it based on what I’ve seen.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@marcprecipice not that I’m implying that people like you and I are requirements for a hit product, but I can’t help but notice that a lot of early-adopter/enthusiast folks like us passed on this and while correlation does not imply causation, I do think the absence of some of us folks, especially those of us who aren’t particularly price sensitive, was a bad sign from the beginning.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@jeffkibuule @paul I always YOLO and spend the VC money on shit like this. It will almost always die, even the best engineered and executed stuff (RIP, Pebble). So I most certainly set my expectations to zero she decide if the money is enough for me to risk.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@danhon @marcprecipice oh, to be clear, it was my main barrier, but less the dollar figure and more the lack of perceived value. I spent over $5000 on a 14” MBP in November. A stupid amount of money on a laptop (I sold my 2021 M1 Max for $2000, but still!), but I could justify that. Even with free financing and some ability to write it off, I just couldn’t find the value and I’m not rich enough to buy it as a toy.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@secretgeek @danhon @marcprecipice I genuinely and truly think that if it had been framed as a dev kit from the beginning, this would not be happening this way. You wouldn’t have the wave of stories of returns and eBay sales and not a single one sold in weeks. Instead, you’d prob have people actively trying to build more cool stuff for it. But the positioning as a ready to market device set expectations the launched product cannot match. And maybe that changes at wwdc, but momentum is lost.

Listening to The Rest Is Entertainment who are going on about the new Taylor Swift album. Is it any good?
(Can’t decide whether I want to ask @film_girl this question :))

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@sil I like it. I like it a lot. That said, this isn’t the record for everyone. It is too long. It is overwrought. It is messy. I’m personally obsessed with that stuff but I also don’t think people not as into her lore and story will find it as artistically interesting as I do. There are some fantastic songs on it. There are some misses. There are some mid-tier. I like it more than Midnights by a lot but I also won’t call it flawless. 1989 it isn’t. It isn’t even Red. But I’m a fan of mess.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@sil so the gist is this: we all assumed the album was going to be about the dissolution of her 6+ year relationship with a British actor you’ve never heard of. He gets 2 songs. The NFL current boyfriend? Also 2 songs. So 27 songs are about the guy from the 1975 she publicly dated for a month. And he fucked her over. And she’s mad about it. And depressed by it. I don’t know if you need to know that going in. But that’s the lore. Taylor has terrible taste in men and wrote 27 songs about this guy

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@sil but seriously, if you ever want to see a murder, please listen to the song the smallest man who ever lived. Not since John Mayer was embarrassed out of making music via her 2010 opus, Dear John (which was done in the style of a John Mayer song, classic), has Taylor ever torn a person to shreds quite like this. She also did the Dear John thing by making a 1975 song called The Tortured Poets Department, which is great. But the one with the venom is the smallest man who ever lived.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@sil indeed! And yes! Lovely and incandescently angry. And diaristic to the extreme. A lot of critics I think rightfully call out the lack of some editing. Valid. However, there is something I genuinely love as an artistic statement about the most famous person on the planet just releasing the diary out there, knowing we all know who the songs are about, not being coy and just saying “this is what I do instead of going to therapy.” And fwiw, that guy will prob get off on this notoriety.
