@gil rocks bro!!!
when I was a kid my grandpa showed me how/where to find agates at the beach, and later I had a mineral ID book with big gorgeous photos of all kinds of rocks. my mom would take us on trips to caves and waterfalls and stuff.
in college I studied geology for around a year, and a very learned but stern trans woman taught me about minerals and geomorphology and everything. she sent us around to collect samples/fossils from different areas, and I learned where to find certain types of rocks and stuff. she is on another level; multiple times I've seen her look at a random pile of sediment and somehow be able to identify precisely where it came from.
anyway I started getting a lot better at finding rocks at rivers, creeks, beaches, etc. and after a while my studies also inspired me to collect rarer and crazier rocks than just local agates, so I bought a few inexpensive specimens, some of which are described on my blog.
I try not to view it as a consumerist type thing; I don't want to accumulate just for its own sake. I view it as appreciating the earth, and there's a mathematical style beauty to how crystals form too. idk I have like two boxes worth of various awesome rocks, and I already kinda feel like it's too much. I asked a geologist if he'd collected material from all the different places he's been, and he said not really but he wishes he had. lol. idk I would love to start a modest rock shop or something.
so yeah I'm out here getting these rocks, just finding gems and crystals and shit at the river. right now (or soon) is a pretty good time for river rock hounding as the water levels are way down

What would the internet be like in a thousand years? One of my favorite Wikipedia articles has always been "Timeline of the Far Future" which contains a table of far-off predictions/estimates: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_far_future

I know about link rot and the fact that lots of sites are actually very ephemeral. At some point we could invent an extremely stable form of storage though, like permanently etching data into inert crystals or something, and in the future there could be near perfect retention of all data, maybe. What's left of our modern web by then would be miniscule in comparison, and maybe they'd truly value every scrap of data about our lives just like archaeologists today.

Idk just thinkin out loud. I know by then "the internet" won't exist exactly as it is now, but I wonder if we can make any predictions about the far-future state of information technology and where our data will ultimately go, similar to the Wikipedia article

the water level has been dropping rapidly (ideal rock foraging conditions) but I'm too tired to go all the way to the river. I'm just gonna kick it at the library

probably my #1 motivation for running a sharkey instance (plus some other similar technical services for friends) is simply to hurt big tech lol. engagemen't. everything self hosted is that much less profit for meta, google, etc

I want to make a custom theme - is there some way to check for accessibility issues, like a tool where I put in some colors and it tells me if that scheme isn't ideal for colorblind people or something?

wowww I'm vibin at the creek again and I found a crazy agate. It's by far the best one I've found at this creek. This spot is pretty popular so I'm surprised.
I feel like agates don't always photograph too well, but trust me they look cool in person

kern,
@kern@hol.ogra.ph avatar

The bands/stripes are what make it an agate, otherwise it's quite literally just sparkling quartz

is it a bad idea to use a monospaced font for a personal site/blog (e.g. courier)? like are they considered less readable or something?

I had no luck seeing the last night, so tonight I'm gonna travel to a wildlife refuge since it's the spot with the lowest light pollution near me
