✨💖 hello holoreaders! 💖✨

it's time to discuss and choose your picks for the first round of :eoc_read:

read the blurbs below for each book before you vote here: https://strawpoll.com/e2narGBKAgB (vote ends in 3 days)

  1. Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum - @jammy

about a korean woman who quits her fast-paced job and opens up a bookshop and finds peace in her life.

  1. A Professional Lola by E. P. Tuazon - @jammy> short stories influenced by the filipino-american experience.

  2. The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez - @kalayo> Another reread for me lmao. It's a frame story, a story within a story within a story. It shifts between first, second, and third POVs on a sentence-by-sentence level. It's kind of a lot to keep up with, but really fun once it's got its hooks in. It's about two outcasts trying to transport a dying goddess across the country, on the run from the emperor she escaped from. It's also about the Inverted Theater, where the lovechild of the Moon and Water performs. It's also about a man during something that's WW2 but not, thinking about the stories his lola used to tell. CW for graphic violence and death, imprisonment, and all that people go through under a tyrannical emperor

  3. Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism and the World by Malcolm Harris - @webnotbombs> I am in the middle of Palo Alto: a History of California, Capitalism and the World by Malcolm Harris and it is amazing. I found this book by way of Mastodon, would highly recommend to absolutely everyone. I think it's really timely in regards to the current situation with Silicon Valley and society.

  4. The Lonely Hearts Book Club by Lucy Gilmore - @jammy> about a librarian who starts a book club to help lonely people in her town and forms an unexpected friendship with a grumpy old man.

  5. Babel by R.F. Kuang - @kalayo> Yes I already read this a few months ago yes I would be happy to reread it with friends. She's thick but she's delicious. It's historical fantasy set juuust before the first opium war, but England has ✨magic✨. Magic specifically powered by translation. The book follows an orphan plucked from Chinya and groomed to study as a ✨translator✨ in Oxford. This one is about friendship, colonial resistance, how shitty academia is, and a lot of nerdery and politics about language and translation. CW for racism; parental death; physical, emotionyal, and colonial violence.

  6. Queer Phenomenology by Sara Ahmed - @kalayo> I don't know much about this one, but it's non-fiction and othe title seems self-explanyatory? Might be cool if anyone is in the mood to get brainy 🤓

  7. Good Bones and Simple Murders by Margaret Atwood - @kern> More of an eclectic collection of stories/poems than a novel.

  8. Writers & Lovers by Lily King - @kalayo> Suggested mostly because it's next on my reading list haha. As far as I can tell, it's about a woman who is trying to be an artist, but life sucks and she's not writing as much as she wants to? Coming-of-age but for adults lol. It doesn't sound like much, but it's recommended by a friend whose taste is excellent and I can always trust them. Apparently this one is sad and funny and hopeful, in the way life is.

  9. Kaikeyi by Vaishvani Patel - @jammy> reimagining of the villainised stepmother from the ancient Indian epic the Ramayana.

  10. Terry Pratchett surprise pick - @kalayo> We can probably spin a wheel to choose and it'll be fine? 💀

We have finally completed migration to Sharkey (and to a faster, snappier VPS!) Exclusive thanks to @kern for working extremely hard on making sure everything was properly backed up and moved from the old setup. User sessions should still be preserved, but you may require a hard refresh/cleared cache to get some pages to display again. As we said in our announcement to local users, please report any issues to this account, @kern, or @gil

Happy shonking!!!!!!

🚨 Planned Migration Downtime 🚨

Attention, hol.ogra.ph users: Hol.ogra.ph will be down for a planned migration attempt on 2024/02/10 at 12:00 Pacific Standard Time (US) (2024/02/11 at 04:00 PST (Philippines)). This migration attempt will last for approximately three hours. We will be moving to a Sharkey instance on a server with higher specs if all is successful. You will not need to do anything to prepare for this, simply make note that you will not be able to access hol.ogra.ph during that time. When logging into Sharky initially, do NOT complete the user setup, as it will overwrite your old settings.

Welcome to Hol.ogra.ph

We are excited to announce that sign-ups are now open on https://hol.ogra.ph !

Hol.ogra.ph is a new, general-purpose Firefish instance started on 21 July 2023. We're building a colorful, inclusive, and friendly place on the Fediverse for all who wish to cultivate and be part of that sort of community. We center our efforts on one main mission, which we call our Prime Directive: "to be nice."

We started this instance because we wanted to create a cozy space on the internet, which could be a safe place for other queer/trans people, people of color, neurodivergent people, community organizers, etc. We want to bring social media experiences which feel more human and focused on community, unlike many corporate-run platforms which commodify/disrespect their users and willingly allow bigotry and misinformation to spread. Hol.ogra.ph strives to become a hub for connecting with your community without violating your privacy, serving ads, or selling your data.

Fedi-what?

If you're new to the Fediverse, the Fediverse is a decentralized group of federated social media networks. It includes platforms for microblogging, photo and video sharing, link aggregation, and more, which "talk" to one another. Unlike centralized platforms, such as Facebook, X (f. Twitter), Instagram, Bluesky, etc., which have sole control over things like how much the platform costs, your data, moderation, and ads, these decisions are handled on a community-by-community basis on the Fediverse.

This way, even on platforms with fewer users such as ours, you can still talk to users on other platforms in the Fediverse! And if you're dissatisfied with your experience on one platform, you're not locked in and can more easily move to another - giving you more control over your data and your online community.

How can I support Hol.ogra.ph?

We are currently working on setting up a page to take donations and fundraise. We plan for none of that funding to go to us personally -- instead, any funds we raise or donations we receive will go directly towards server hosting and other associated costs, primarily providing runway to keep our server online. Extra funds raised will be used to grow/scale our operations. In the future, we may also add other services to our ogra.ph domain for you to use.

Besides that, we'd greatly appreciate any help with federating and getting the word out about our instance!

With ❤️, Hol.ogra.ph 🌈
