you can tell this web client is made by twitterbrained techbros because it hides the instance portion of the username even against the advice of eugen joinmastodon (or whoever wrote the mastodon client docs)

researching *key instances
ask the admin if the instance is firefish or sharkey
they don't understand
i pull out a diagram explaining the lineage of misskey forks, the difference between mkv12 and mkv13
they laugh and say "it's a good instance, sir"
open the instance
it's vanilla misskey

one of the things that drives me up the wall is how hacky User Agents are, and how they've literally just stayed the same abhorrent nightmare. everyone relies on them though for some reason... i know i'm not the first one to dislike how user agents are done... just look at the wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User-Agent_header but it's not even describing how bad they really got... like shit read mozilla's docs https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers/User-Agent/Firefox it is so fucking gross Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 12_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) FxiOS/7.0.4 Mobile/16B91 Safari/605.1.15 and of course google's official solution is to deprecate them for privacy invasive browser fingerprinting... like okay we could've literally just made it something like TERMINFO... but no we just gonna make this giant ass string with shit like "KHTML, like Gecko" and it's like why... i hate seeing how they evolve lol.

kopper,

@puppygirlhornypost fun fact: the fedi has a similar problem.

the mastodon client api has become the de facto client api due to the popularity of mastodon. so a lot of non-mastodon fedi software implement it. aside from all implementations being broken in their unique ways (including mastodon's own, which does not match the documentation they publish!), the version field of the instance info endpoint has become another user agent-like nightmare

sharkey for example claims to be mastodon version 3.0.0 (compatible; Sharkey 2024.3.1)

to *key devs and etc: what is the most compliant implementation of MFM? what do i have to watch out for in implementing MFM? are there good MFM libraries that i can use? thanks :)

boost or forward if u want

kopper,

@j0 mfm has no standard beyond "whatever misskey does". misskey's mfm parser also sucks and is horrible

akkoma's mfm parser is weird on it's own way, libmfm is... a thing i think??

tldr: good luck. everything sucks here

Added full-text search to today.

After reading a massive tome about earlier this week I realised it was complete overkill and just used the full-text capabilities of instead.

Currently PieFed has 46,000 posts and results are fast. It'll be interesting to see how well it copes when there are more posts. Anyone want to make a guess when it'll bog down?

https://piefed.social/post/48889

kopper,

@rimu if postgres ends up bogging down consider taking a look at https://github.com/valeriansaliou/sonic, it seems to be a nice compromise between the behemoths of elastic and meili and the simplicity of postgres fts.

(this instance i'm on is modified to use postgres fts and with almost 2 million posts in the database it's still quite fast, though search isn't as accurate as the 'simple' language in postgres fts not doing any language stuff and sharkey hasn't merged post language support just yet so i can't adjust it properly)

More recently, the JPEG XL team at Google has built yet another JPEG encoder, jpegli, which is both faster and better than even mozjpeg. It is based on lessons learned from guetzli and libjxl, and offers a very attractive trade-off: it is very fast, compresses better than WebP and even high-speed AVIF, while still producing good old JPEG files that are supported everywhere.

https://cloudinary.com/blog/jpeg-xl-and-the-pareto-front

wait so hang on a minute...

  1. there's a "JPEG XL team at Google"???
  2. there's a new jpeg encoder
  3. ...that beats webp???
  4. ...with good old jpeg???

sometimes i just see a hashtag in a post and go "who in their right mind actually looks through that hashtag what do you gain by adding that hashtag to that post?" like are there people out there who go "hello i am interested in hashtag fascism let me follow the fascism hashtag for all my latest fascism news"

(this isn't about tumblr-style tagging btw, i know people use those for different stuff. this is about twitter-style hashtags)
