This is a thread, it was originally on twitter posted on tumblr and i found it in my export. I think that this is a very important thing for people to hear, especially in regards to alt text on fedi. Please be mindful of the people around you, and try to make things accessible. I think that the people around me can relate to this, I have had a lot of times my short term memory would just blank out and I would have to ask over and over again for someone to repeat themselves.

We'll be blacklisting mailbox.org and websites using it for email hosting for registration on discuss.grapheneos.org and as an alert email for attestation.app. They're blocking emails from our mail server for a convoluted, nonsensical reason and won't stop.

@GrapheneOS @FamilyCyclist @heinleinsupport still it’s completely unreasonable to expect y’all to chunk over the money for a /48 just to fix one mail provider. I hate prefix blacklisting for ipv6, prefixes rotate all the time. I hate how on v4 it’s especially common for ips to be tainted once and never again be unblocked. Run a tor relay once? Yeah good luck getting that IP in a clean slate again. It’s so wasteful to me

@GrapheneOS @FamilyCyclist yeah most mail providers are unreasonable in my experience. I don’t host email because I didn’t want to do that to myself but I do some IP forwarding with netfilter (unfortunately it’s written with iptables instead of the hip nftables) and a wireguard tunnel. My home servers just use a wg tunnel and it’s neat. Works fine for what it does. I wanted to get into rewriting ips so my traffic wasn’t all just from my wireguard interface, I believe it’s possible with netfilter in particular I just never got around to it.

@GrapheneOS @FamilyCyclist I wonder what their reason is? Usually the big hosting providers don’t take kindly to when people block their entire AS. I remember hetzner and discord having problems because hetzner had done a lot of abusive things towards discord. they eventually worked out a deal. I hate when you’re just caught in the crossfire of that. Sucks, I think that y’all did the right call, what else are you gonna do? Wait years for an issue between two companies to be resolved when the mail provider clearly has no interest in changing things? Completely fair to drop support for them.

what I really don't like about the AI hype cycle is that "genAI" can mean either "generative AI" or "general AI" and those are two very very very different things that people keep munging together

@astrid i also hate how AI is loosely defined, what is an artificial intelligence? Are we really trying to recreate human intelligence? are we trying to recreate the intelligence of a rat? AGI or Artificial General Intelligence still has this problem. I actually still despise AGI as a concept because I think that it should be specialized to certain things. The datasets of these modern LLMs are so vast and so expansive it makes them nearly useless. It would be one thing to have an llm that's specialized but the dream of AGI? Really? "Jack of all trades" much?

@aster @lea well, i mean mac addresses are funny because nowadays spoofing them is by default. you get mac address randomizing with virtual network interfaces as part of windows or ios even. @aster @lea love how we know mac address collision is very much possible with the amount of devices today, and i've seen it happen. mac addresses are a lot less "static" and can change so it's fun.

@aster @lea like yea if i really cared i could just buy another AX211 and boom now that previous mac address was useless. i doubt i am going to be connecting this laptop to a lot of networks at large (because i don't it's rare i connect this laptop to non trusted networks). find it really funny, i know that it is useful to track. you still get nintendo consoles broadcasting their mac addresses and you can just flat out denylist nintendo's oui as a "measure" to prohibit gaming on your network. tons of fun things to do with it

@lea @aster ngl i wouldn't be surprised because this is a trust based system, there's nothing stopping you from using other people's mac addresses. nothing, no technical limitation. it's more of a formality for the big vendors who make network cards and equipment.

@lea @aster like yeah it sounds absurd to think about 2^48 mac addresses ever becoming a problem but if you think about it that definitely makes sense when you loop back to things like virtual network interfaces. How many virtual interfaces through VMWare's hypervisor ESXi alone? Thousands can exist within a single client so it's very much realistic when you get into virtual network interfaces. A single 16 mil allocation could definitely be eaten up by things like virtual network interfaces.
