Hate those fake updates from USPS where their computer sees that nothing has happened for a couple of days and inserts some generic "oh, we've totally put it on a truck and it's heading to you!” It has been sitting there for 3 days! Definitely not arriving today. 😔

@fozztexx Zener diodes used as voltage regulators typically pull the output voltage down to the desired voltage, so without it, the voltage will go higher than 5V... Probably not desirable.

Edit: ignore me. Actually looked at the rest of your thread and we're looking at a bootstrap SMPS circuit here.

@fozztexx Cool. So that's your primary power path for 5V. The zener is a way for the 5V rail to bootstrap itself on startup from the 12V rail, but ideally the zener shouldn't normally be doing much since it can't handle a ton of current.
