In case anyone was wondering, the top three metros on my wish list for the #MicroMirror project currently are Atlanta, GA, Phoenix, AZ, and Las Vegas, NV.

So if you know of an ISP or DC in those areas who have plenty of egress bandwidth and would be willing to plug in a managed appliance to support free software/linux, let us know: mirror@fcix.net

Incoming! A severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm is expected to arrive around 02:00 UTC Friday night / Saturday morning.

At least 5 Coronal Mass Ejections took place over the past 24 hours, directed towards Earth. These originated from a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664).

There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.

And bright auroras as far south as Alabama!

Time for everyone to upgrade to Fedora 40. Go go go.

The sooner you download the new release, the more internet points you get for it.

hlindqvist,
@hlindqvist@noc.social avatar

@kwf I suppose it is rather silly how everyone "needs" to download the new thing all at once.
That said, your micromirrors seem to hold up really well compared to some other big mirrors!
I needed two different images, cancelled two really slow/stalling downloads, on retry both files were served at good speed and in both cases from *.mm.fcix.net hosts.
Thank you for your work on that!

I think we're focused on the wrong thing when we look at what tech works for a company like Amazon or Facebook or Netflix.

We should be looking at what tech works when you don't have a small army of staff engineers optimizing it. I want to know what I can scale without paying someone a half million dollar salary to do it.

There should be more case studies on things that don't have a billion-dollar company propping them up, humming along quietly on a cheap-ass VPS somewhere.

Now if anyone comes by to visit driving an EV, we can plug them in; just BYOEVSE.

If you've been putting off buying a smol retrocomputer then now might be a good time to look again. I'm clearing out most of my shop and everything is priced to move. In the name of space I don't plan to restock some of the items like the Micro Osborne Ones.

Does anyone know what a realistic figure is for USB MSC transfer speeds over USB 1.1 / full-speed / 12 Mb/s?

attie,
@attie@chaos.social avatar

... and who picked a fastness adjective to name the links?

  • Low-Speed (fine I guess)
  • Full-Speed (not an antonym)
  • High-Speed (ah, there's the expected antonym)
  • SuperSpeed (bye bye dash)
  • SuperSpeed+ (yay plus!)
  • SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps (oh, not double-plus?)
  • USB4 40Gbps (ah, we've learnt?)
  • USB4 80Gbps (uh huh)

#TomSachs made a series of print-on-demand zines that were distributed via ATMs. For a $5 charge on your card, you'd receive a 12-foot-long receipt that could be folded and assembled into a cute little zine. Here's the video of the installation in action during Tom's "Space Program: Europa" show at the Yerba Buena Center For The Arts in 2017. #zines

video of an ATM that is installed in the YBCA. A card is inserted into the machine and the user is charged $5. Then a long receipt comes out with instructions on how to fold it. The final zine, in it's assembled form is shown at the end of the video.

Ok, Vger's MX is heading off to point to subspace on Thursday. Web services are staying put for now, so if you link to / use Vger it's staying put (possibly with a massive OS upgrade coming).

The fundamental infrastructure isn't going anywhere even if it has to change it's name, and should lists not want to head off to subspace, infradead, etc I've got https://vger.email up and running and capable of picking things up should anyone want to jump.

End of an era, Vger's been independent of kernel.org from it's start, but it's a non-trivial set of lists that literally keep the Linux kernel community moving, and has since it's inception. It's realistically needed an upgrade to deal with a plethora of problems, and frankly various large e-mail providers have made it nearly untenable to keep doing without it nearly being a full time job (at least at the scale that Vger's at)
