lambalicious,

Putting a cost on software is adding a restriction, thus making it less free (as in freedom).

Don’t confuse “free from cost” with “free from restrictions”.

Writing software costs costs - be them time, money, evne mental health as we have often seen because of too many entitled people in these communities. Putting a price on the software means valuing it for what it is, and does not incur in any additional restriction on the usage of the software.

All that said, I think the cost of free software, at least when it comes to infrastructure software, is something that shouldn’t be necessary for the end user to pay. Similar to how we pay taxes, instead of paying for the installation of semaphores on our streets directly.

If I were to design any such global system, it would be eg.: distro maintainers who would pay a maintenance cost to the developers of the dependencies they ship. Probably in the form of a funding pool that is distributed across projects prioritizing those that 1.- have ethics and development practices more similar to the distro’s and 2.- are in need of more immediate attention for solving security or usability bugs.

Furthermore, national-level funds for this would be collected via a taxation system managed by an academic office or other such entity and taken in a measure scaled according to the nation’s average technological “estate” (after all, developing and maintaining a more complex system requires more cares and attentions).

lambalicious,

The Bible is very clear

Yeah I’m always reminded of this piece www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CPjWd4MUXs .

lambalicious,

Escusé moi your angloparlance, we call it Luna.

lambalicious,

They do, actually. Some people seriously need to touch grass. Most stuff in life, in particular digital stuff, is not urgent.

lambalicious,
lambalicious,

If we’re allowed to - and happily do - copy over content from for-profit websites with bots, it feels a bit weird to then get angry about that happening in reverse, no?

Not at all. It’s a matter of asynchronous power play.

We can do the former as a fight against power, but we have to fight for it. When they do it to us, it’s “just business” and we have no defense.

lambalicious,

¡Bienvenido a uso Arch btw!

Index arrays with ordinals instead of integers with custom literals (programming.dev)

I did a code that uses custom literals to allow indexing arrays with ordinals (1st, 2nd, 3rd), all at compile time. Additionally _st works only with 1, _nd only with 2, _rd only with 3. Zero and negative numbers are also not supported and fail compilation....

lambalicious,

This sounds pretty interesting to do for funsies. I wonder if / how easy can it be extended to support i18n (eg.: “1_ro”, “2_do”, “3_ro”, “4_to” for Spanish).

Also thanks for not supporting negatvie integers. Trying to do that with UDLs over integers leads to rather annoying “funsies”, see StackOverflow and glados-418.

lambalicious,

Sounds like a plan for a funsies long weekend, might send a PR if I advance with it enough.

lambalicious,

Perhaps we should take the clue and - if we also see clues of Mozilla enshittifying - switch globally to an easier internet that’s also easier to program for. Something like Gemini (the post-Gopher thingy, not Google’s latest fad) for example, where I take it maintaining a browser is nowhere near the same order of magnitude as complex.

lambalicious,

lambalicious,

FIRST

Fam, the Teslas have been manslaughtering around for a while.

lambalicious,

No, it turns off to disregard legal blame. Everything that the autopilot is turning itself off for right before a crash, is something that not only can be done with the autopilot on, but the autopilot can do faster, safer and better than a human. For as much as counts at that point.

https://www.theclinic.cl/2024/01/29/son-una-tropa-de-jovencitos-arrogantes-evelyn-matthei-udi-sepulta-en-criticas-la-gestion-de-gobierno-del-presidente-gabriel-boric/

@chile

lambalicious,

lambalicious,

¿Otras vez la CAM, digo los CAMioneros? Qué no tienen algo útil que hacer?

lambalicious,

Caveat emptor ESL here but, while that’s true, wouldn’t under those terms “retarding” be a much better fit?

lambalicious,

Since you(r team) already have the Ubuntu experience, the obvious and senseful migration path is Debian. Stable plus docker/podman covers for most of what’s needed plus cover for the “bUt thIS paCKaGe iS 2 weEkS olD!!!1” crew.

lambalicious,

For a catchy name you could also point that by seceding they can be come the “United States of Systemic Racism”. That very nicely initializes to USSR.

lambalicious,

lambalicious,

Ahí le eché un vistazo, gracias.
