Fun AppKit things I forget:
Calling “window.isZoomed” in the window’s delegate implementation of “windowWillUseStandardFrame:defaultFrame:” will make you sad via infinite recursion.

I really dislike how Mastodon handles direct messages, as if there were just any other post with replies.

Twitter does this much better. Direct messages are grouped by person, as they should be. On Mastodon, though, it’s difficult to see your message history with a person, and it’s always unclear whether you should reply to an old, possibly unrelated direct message or start a new “thread”, which is more difficult than it should be.

@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@grumpygamer That’s not true. Twitter DMs are not E2E encrypted.

It would be rather difficult to achieve with Mastodon’s federated architecture.

Safari users are very confused about the difference between Safari extensions and Safari content blockers. They think StopTheMadness is a content blocker and wonder why turning off content blockers doesn’t work. And of course these people don’t contact Apple when they’re confused: they contact the extension developer, me!

“Apple is in the business of making its users happy”

Wrong. Apple Inc., a publicly owned corporation, is in the business of making its shareholders happy. Never forget that. The interests of Apple users and Apple shareholders are not necessarily aligned.

Remember the game Warren Buffett’s Paper Wizard? Do you think Apple created that to make its users happy? https://mastodon.social/@daringfireball/112288306450965986

"If the world’s tech giants have gotten so big and so powerful that nobody else can even afford the table stakes, we all lose."

Three companies control all of the consumer OS market share on both mobile and desktop. Microsoft was founded in 1975, Apple in 1976, Google in 1998. We're in a period of terrible tech stagnation.

Also, Apple acquired NeXT and Google acquired Android. Those weren’t home-grown technologies. https://zeppelin.flights/@jsnell/112275837967842932

Created a test account on bsky and there appears to be literally no way to opt out of algorithmic feeds. If it decides you aren't following enough people, rather than allowing the Content Spigot to end it starts showing you its fucking algorithmic recommendations after that. God. Fuck Twitter and everything that spawned from it

I submitted StopTheMadness Pro updates today at the same time. The iOS version has already been approved with no problems. The Mac version was just rejected because “we need a sample page to try the Safari extension on.”

Funny how they didn’t need that for the iOS version. Or for the 11 previous releases of StopTheMadness Pro. The inconsistency of App Review is ridiculous. Where was this with version 1.0? Why do these rejections occur seemingly at random? Is there a quota for reviewers to meet?

I was stunned by this: “In just two months, SwiftUI will be five years old.”

I’ve never used SwiftUI myself, but my second-hand impression is that especially on the Mac, SwiftUI is still quite primitive and underdeveloped.
