Here’s the letter from 14 senators slamming TSA facial recognition in airports - The Verge

"Facial recognition “poses significant threats to our privacy and civil liberties, and Congress should prohibit TSA’s development and deployment of facial recognition tools until rigorous congressional oversight occurs,” reads part of the May 2nd letter (via Gizmodo) from Sens. Merkley, Kennedy, Markey, Marshall, Cramer, Wyden, Warren, Daines, Braun, Sanders, Lummis, Van Hollen, Welch, and Butler.

They add later that “this powerful surveillance technology as deployed by TSA does not make air travel safer” and suggest that the TSA’s current error rate of 3 percent would lead to 68,000 mismatches each day if expanded to all US airports."

Judge Aileen Cannon Responds to Claims She Did Not Disclose 'Luxury' Trips

"Sean O'Driscoll

Aileen Cannon, the judge overseeing Donald Trump's classified documents case, has said she declared two "luxury" resort trips to Montana that were mentioned in a National Public Radio investigation.

"Cannon, herself a Trump appointee, attended two seminars at a luxury resort in Montana, but the privately funded seminar disclosures for both events were not posted online until NPR began making inquiries," NPR's online investigation states.

"Clerk of court Angela Noble told NPR in an email that the absence of the disclosures was due to technical issues and that 'Any omissions to the website are completely inadvertent," it adds."

"Trump is undergoing something called NARCISSISTIC MORTIFICATION. We dusted off this Freudian term a few weeks ago, and it's super-relevant today, after Trump heard Hope Hicks' testimony and relived the Access Hollywood incident. Sure enough, he's been panic-posting today, ALL CAPS, going after Jack Smith and others. (Why Jack Smith, who has nothing to do with the NY criminal trial? Because he's an adversary with power to take him down, and that's the kind of jumpy associations that panicky people make.)
Narcissistic Mortification is when a narcissist like Trump crosses over to a place where he sees visions of his own demise. A malignant narcissist, especially one who once held the loftiest of titles, cannot cope with this. Trump's gut is now a simmering stew of dread, rage, and malice. But it's the "dread" that's dominant. He is very unhinged, yet uncomfortable in the feeling itself, if that makes sense.

"To put it in more psychological terms, narcissistic mortification is EXTREME fear experienced when one with a rigidly grandiose pathology sees his sense of self as exposed, defective or inferior. It was coined by Freud in his book Moses and Monotheism. It's described there as deep injuries to ego/self, triggered by one's own compulsiveness (aka Access Hollywood), causing not only terror, not only malice, but disorientation (thus the attack on Smith).

"THIS is where I think he is. For a malignant narcissist like Trump, it's hell."

"Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton writes in his book that Trump encouraged the Chinese dictator to continue building concentration camps used to detain millions of Uighur Muslims:

“At the opening dinner of the Osaka G-20 meeting in June 2019, with only interpreters present, Xi had explained to Trump why he was basically building concentration camps in Xinjiang.

According to our interpreter, Trump said that Xi should go ahead with building the camps, which Trump thought was exactly the right thing to do. The National Security Council’s top Asia staffer, Matthew Pottinger, told me that Trump said something very similar during his November 2017 trip to China.""

The Sadness of Sharing a Country With Trump Supporters

"… I watch them pass by with his name affixed to their heads and attached to their bumpers in cultic adoration—and it grieves me to know how far gone so many around me seem to be. I no longer recognize the place I’ve always called home.

And I know that I’m not alone. I know that right now, variations of these thoughts are being played out millions of times inside the heads of people all over this country; empathetic human beings like me who have found the reservoirs of hope dangerously low and who can’t seem to shake the profound sense of dread hovering always in the periphery of their daily life.…"

Trump Media’s accounting firm charged with ‘massive fraud’ | CNN Business

"The SEC accused BF Borgers of “deliberate and systemic failures,” including “fabricating” audit documentation and falsely representing to clients its work would comply with accounting standards.

The agency described this as “massive” fraud taking place between January 2021 and June 2023 that impacted more than 1,500 SEC filings and more than 500 public companies.

The SEC imposed a severe penalty against BF Borgers, permanently suspending the firm from practicing as accountants before the agency effective immediately. The firm and its owner, Benjamin Borgers, also agreed to pay $14 million collectively in fines"

Trader Joe’s To Pay Legal Fees To Employee Union Over Its Bullshit Trademark Lawsuit | Techdirt

"Vera said on Tuesday that the weakness and impropriety of Trader Joe’s case justified ordering the company to pay the union’s attorneys’ fees.

“Employers should be discouraged from bringing meritless claims against unions they are challenging at the ballot box,” Vera said.

As I’ve said before, the bad PR associated with all of this should have been enough to motivate Trader Joe’s to course correct. Instead, it seems like even more pressure on the company from the public and courts is required."

A failure of imagination about Trump - The Atlantic

"Trump told Time that he thinks people actually like it when he sounds like a dictator, and he’s not entirely wrong: As I’ve noted, much of his base loves talk of “vermin” and the idea of exacting revenge on other Americans. But there are two other important reasons that many people are not taking Trump seriously enough—and that Biden, a long-serving American politician, is struggling in the polls with an often incoherent would-be autocrat.

One problem has been around as long as the republic: Americans don’t pay attention to politics, and when they do, they frequently blame the current president for whatever is going wrong in their lives. "

"But on the Sun, they usually can be found around the center of sunspot groups, where magnetic conditions are strong and large coronal loops are forming. The moss is so hot, most instruments can't detect them. The moss spans two atmospheric layers, the chromosphere and corona."

Was There A Trojan Horse Hidden In Section 230 All Along That Could Enable Adversarial Interoperability? | Techdirt

"It could be a trojan horse that no one noticed in Section 230 that effectively bars websites from taking legal action against middleware providers who are providing technical means for people to filter or screen content on their feed. Now, it’s important to note that it does not bar those companies from putting in place technical measures to block such tools, or just banning accounts or whatever. But that’s very different from threatening or filing civil suits.

If this theory works, it could do a lot to enable these kinds of middleware services and make it significantly harder for big social media companies like Meta to stop them. If you believe in adversarial interoperability, that could be a very big deal. Like, “shift the future of the internet we all use” kind of big."

rayckeith,
@rayckeith@techhub.social avatar

"the argument being made here is that this creates some sort of proactive immunity from lawsuits for middleware creators who are building tools (“technical means”) to “restrict access.” In short: does Section 230 protect “Unfollow Everything” from basically any legal threats from Meta, because it’s building a tool to restrict access to content on Meta platforms?"
